Heart Disease: Finally, research backs up what NHR has been saying for years certain fats are vital for your heart
For years now, the low-fat pundits have been nagging us to eat less fat claiming it is detrimental to health and can increase the risk of serious conditions like heart disease. As youll know NHR has always maintained that eating the right kinds of fat can provide numerous health benefits and actually prevent heart disease.
While fats like saturated fats (found in lard and butter) can be detrimental when eaten in excess, others like monounsaturated fats (found in olive oil, avocados and nuts) and polyunsaturated fats (found in oily fish and hemp seed oil) are vital for good health and are needed for stamina, brain function, to build hormones and keep your skin soft and your weight down.
Hopefully the message is now finally starting to get across that certain fats are an essential part of your diet following the latest research findings, which show that when it comes to fat, quality is far more important than quantity.
The study concentrated mainly on the benefits of polyunsaturated fat, of which there are two types that you cannot function without. They are alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), an omega-3 essential fatty acid, and linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 essential fatty acid. Doctor David E. Laaksonen, from the University of Kuopio in Finland, and his colleagues, evaluated the intake of the polyunsaturated fat linoleic acid found in flax and other plant oils as well as total polyunsaturated fat intake, in 1,551 middle-aged Finnish men. Four-day food records and blood tests were used to estimate dietary fatty acid intake.
Researchers then looked at medical records on the men 15 years later to find out about heart disease and deaths. There were 225 deaths, 78 of which were caused by cardiovascular disease. The research team found that men who consumed the most linoleic acid and total polyunsaturated fatty acids were 62 per cent less likely to die of heart disease than the other men in the study. Total fat intake was not related to cardiovascular disease or all-cause mortality.
The authors concluded, Dietary fat quality thus seems more important than fat quantity in the reduction of CVD mortality in middle-aged men. Carrying out recommendations to replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease may substantially decrease CVD and to a lesser degree overall mortality. So dont avoid fat in your diet, simply limit your intake of the wrong kind of fats. To make sure youre getting enough of the two beneficial types of polyunsaturated fatty acids LA and LNA take one to two tablespoons of hemp seed oil a day (keep the bottle in the fridge).
