Over 2,000 years ago, a herbal preparation called Padma 28 was formulated in Tibet to treat illnesses like atherosclerosis, which were believed to be brought on by the over-consumption of meat, fat, and alcohol. It was basically a remedy for the wealthy the only people who could afford the sort of lifestyle that included such indulgences.

But in the middle of the 19th century a Tibetan doctor took the recipe which contains a unique blend of 19 different herbs, including Bengal quince, allspice, marigold, Indian costus, Iceland moss, red sandalwood, and knot grass through Poland to St. Petersburg.

It was here that the preparation was developed into a safe and effective treatment for intermittent claudication a painful condition in which a decrease in the flow of blood to the legs brings about a reduction in oxygen to your lower extremities. Left untreated, intermittent claudication can lead to gangrene and other serious health problems like hardening of the arteries and heart disease.1, 2, 3

Unsurprisingly, its ability to provide much-needed relief from this debilitating condition meant that its popularity soon grew, and it wasnt long until Padma 28 became available throughout Europe. As soon as the preparation became available in the UK, HSI brought you a report on its health benefits in your July 2000 issue. Now, this ancient recipe has revealed yet another important use improved mood.

So in addition to its already established benefits which include providing immune support, promoting healthy circulation, reducing inflammation and fighting harmful free radicals as a result of its antioxidant properties Padma 28 may also offer a natural way of restoring emotional balance.

Research involving Padma 28 and intermittent claudication revealed some unexpected findings
As weve seen time and time again with natural remedies, the discovery of Padma 28s new benefits came about by accident. Patients taking part in a clinical study on Padma 28 for intermittent claudication began reporting an unexpected side-effect improved mood.

Based on these results, researchers in Germany sought to unravel the mystery with their own study. HSI evaluated the results of the study, and, to be honest, our first reaction was that it was very small were talking three people. Yet the scientists managed to create a study protocol where they produced nine different findings (each test was carried out in triplicate).

HSI wanted to get some more information about this study and the potential next steps in reaction to these findings, so we contacted the exclusive US distributor of Padma 28 Econugenics and spoke to company representative Kerry Hughes. She explained that in this study, scientists took blood samples, then stimulated an inflammatory environment within the samples, while keeping unstimulated controls (namely samples without any inflammation) for comparison.

Blood thats in an inflammatory state has increased levels of a chemical called neopterin. And in the presence of elevated neopterin levels, tryptophan levels are decreased or inhibited. Tryptophan is an important amino acid that helps your body produce the B vitamin niacin which, in turn, helps the body produce a key mood-regulating hormone called serotonin low levels of which have been linked to depression.

So if an inflammatory response prevents the body from making tryptophan, this basically means that it cant make enough serotonin either, which increases the risk of depression.

Padma 28 helps increase levels of natures own antidepressant
What the researchers found when they introduced Padma 28 to the stimulated/inflamed cells, was that there was a decrease in neopterin and a subsequent increase in tryptophan. In fact, the tryptophan concentration in the stimulated cells reached almost 90 per cent of that of the unstimulated cells.

Padma 28s anti-inflammatory effects appear to allow the body to retain more tryptophan, which means it produces more serotonin. And that translates into a better mood.

The research regarding Padma 28s mood-boosting properties is only in the very preliminary stages at present. However, HSI promises to keep a close eye on developments in this area and will let you know as soon as more research findings become available.

What to take for best results
The recommended dosage for Padma 28 is two tablets taken twice a day with a glass of water. An additional two tablets may be taken if needed. After four weeks, intake may be reduced to tablets in the morning. The tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole with a glass of water. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablets, let them dissolve in a glass of warm water and then swallow the mixture.

Contraindications: No interactions between Padma 28 and prescription drugs have been reported. However, if youre taking any medication it is a good idea to consult your doctor first, and once he has given you the OK wait one-and-a half to two hours after taking Padma 28 before taking your medication. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should not use Padma 28.
