Hi

I am a new member, having just joined. I have been receiving your email newsletter for some time. I was interested to see the article on statins and CoQ10.

My current GP here in Ireland suggested that it would be a good idea to take CoQ10 with my Lipitor. But my previous GP, who put me on Lipitor (high cholesterol and hypertension run in the family) never mentioned CoQ10.

Also, even though I have a history of muscle cramps years before starting on Lipitor, I was getting more of them in recent times, especially the legs. A bit of internet research led me to some forums where people also mentioned statins and muscle cramps.

My pharmacist, and he is a good one, said to take CoQ10 as statins robbed your body of the enzyme. Lo and behold, for the most part my cramps have subsided.

But my important question is this: My fiancée (she is 59) has been in hospital for 25 days now here in Dublin. Prior to that she had presented at another hospital twice (I had to call the ambulance both times) and was initially diagnosed with UTI. They sent her home with me that evening. Two days later she fell in the hallway and was non-ambulatory. I don’t know if she hit here head in the fall. Again they sent her home with me that evening – a non-ambulant ill person with no wheelchair (they said they had no beds.)

I tried my best that evening and the following day to take care of her but could not manage so I called a GP to the house who said my fiancée should be in (a different) hospital (St Vincent's) where she has been since June 30. It is a good hospital and she has a very good medical team.

Xrays, ultrasound (which found a gall bladder infection on in addition to the ‘original urinary infection) – which also found a fatty liver, she is a recovering alcoholic – and a CT and a MRI were negative about any possible brain injury.

She is recovering slowly and will be there for at least another week. But she has bouts of confusion and her registrar and SHO both said that there is a slight possibility of slight irreversible brain damage. Three contributory factors: long-term alcohol use/abuse (they don’t think she has a wet brain), the two infections, and vitamin B deficiency could possibility be causing the confusion (she is lucid at times though). Plus hospitals can be confusing places.

Now my question after that long-winded explanation. Are there any sort of remedies that could help her get over her foggy brain? To help her recover mentally? She was on a vitamin drip (and of course, antibiotics).

Thanks for your time concerning this matter. BTW there will no more booze in our house forever and she will go back to AA.

Cheers

Patrick

Hi Patrick

You may already have something that can help ...there has been some interesting research that CoQ10 can help improve mental acuity and reduce brain fog. CoQ10 helps ignite ATP (the energy that fuels our cells), and brain fog is often associated with low energy levels.

Ginkgo Biloba is another that has been shown to have a beneficial effect in this are. It might be worth researching these in more detail

Thanks for that Arjen1, I'll look into it.
