One of the biggest problems my mother had after being diagnosed with emphysema was the excess mucus production. The doctors did not prescribe any medications that took care of this problem and my mother found that Mucinex, an over the counter medications, relieved this symptom temporarily. She went through a lot of Mucinex but it kept her from suffering so I didn't think anything of it.

I eventually realized that all Mucinex was doing was drying up the mucus in her lungs and leaving the residual. That residual, I reasoned, was the cause for the multiple secondary infections she suffered which prompted another prescription for antibiotics.

After researching emphysema and COPD I realized I was finding all the pharmaceutical web sites which told of the wonderful drugs they had developed. They never mention that the drugs only mask symptoms and do not provide any lasting improvement in the patient's condition. In my research, which eventually totalled more than 6500 hours over three and a half years, I found a form of cysteine namely, N-acetyl-l-cysteine, or NAC which had mucolytic properties. That is, NAC would actually break the di-sulfide bonds inherent in mucus. It is these di-sulfide bonds that clump small pieces of mucus into large masses impossible for the patient to cough up. You can hear them coughing and hear the mucus rustling around in their lungs but nothing ever gets coughed up and out of the lungs.

I gave my mother 600 mg which essentially liquefied the mucus allowing her to cough up the mucus and spit it out instead of drying it up and leaving the residue in her lungs.

This made a noticeable improvement in her condition, her overall health and her attitude. She could see the improvement she was making and feel the relief knowing it wasn't a temporary drug-induced improvement.

After pursuing alternative methods of helping my mother with her emphysema and COPD she, step-by-step improved and 17 months after implementing the first findings from my research my mother had completely recovered from emphysema and COPD.
