As the old song goes: You must remember this...folic acid helps keep your cognitive faculties sharp.

Okay, that's not quite the way the old song goes (something about kisses and sighs), but it's a very good thing to remember just the same.

As we've seen in previous studies, high levels of the amino acid homocysteine may contribute to cognitive function problems ranging from mild memory loss to Alzheimer's disease. Likewise, high levels of folate and other B vitamins (most notably B-6 and B-12) have been shown to lower homocysteine as well as the risk of cognitive decline.

I have been taking multi vits for women for the past 4 months and within two weeks I felt sharp, witty and employable again; I had been mumbling my words and being very forgetful for around a year. My GP has done numerous tests the last one of which was to investigate whether I was in the peri-menopause. On the down side the multi vits seem to give me eczema so I have not taken them for a few weeks. I am usless again and if I could remember them would reiterate stories of forgetfulness by the bucketful. I am now looking at testing out which bits in the vits will return me to some normality. I am starting with Folic Acid to be followed in a couple of weeks with B vit complex. There is hope for us 40 somethings yet!
