Combining Omega-3 and Glucosamine for Arthritis Relief

Date: 20/04/10

A recent study showed that combining omega-3 fatty acids with glucosamine could have more benefits for arthritis sufferers than using glucosamine alone.

Omega-3s anti-inflammatory properties are thought to be the reason for their joint health benefits.

Approximately seven million people in the UK are reported to have long-term health problems associated with arthritis, and it is reported to be second to ischemic heart disease as a cause of work disability in men over 50.

The pharmaceutical industry’s answer to treating arthritis mainly rests on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Many sufferers are reliant on NSAIDs to help them carry out their daily activities. While these highly prescribed drugs bring temporary relief they do so at a price. NSAIDs have been linked to some pretty nasty side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, decreased appetite, rash, dizziness, headaches, gastrointestinal toxicity, increased blood pressure, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Powerful all-natural duo brings new hope

With a list of side effects like these it’s no wonder that more and more people are turning to natural supplements to get effective relief from their arthritis. One such supplement, which has shown tremendous potential in many clinical trials, is glucosamine.

A recent study — Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), sponsored by the National Institute of Health — researched the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate in 1,583 people with osteoarthritis. The researchers found that this combination “significantly decreased” knee pain for people suffering from moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis.

Those in the placebo group did not experience any significant improvements.

Enter omega-3

While fish-sourced omega-3 fatty acids are best known for their cardiovascular benefits, they have also been reported to benefit joint health. Their anti-inflammatory properties are thought to be the reason for their joint health benefits.

A recent study showed that combining omega-3 fatty acids with glucosamine could have more benefits than using glucosamine alone.

Results showed that the combination of glucosamine sulphate (1,500mg per day) and omega-3 fatty acids (providing 444mg of fish oil, of which 200mg were omega-3-fatty acids), significantly reduced pain, compared to glucosamine alone.

Commenting on the findings, the researchers said that glucosamine and omega-3 probably acted synergistically: “Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit the inflammation process in osteoarthritis, whereas glucosamine sulphate further supports the rebuilding of lost cartilage substance.”
