Super Omega-3 Helps Combat ADHD and Depression

Date: 19/10/10

In a recent Swedish study, involving 92 children suffering from ADHD, half the children were given the super omega-3 supplement containing a high dose (500mg) of pure ethyl-EPA each day; the other group received a placebo. After just five weeks, teachers noted remarkable improvements in the behaviour of the children who were taking the EPA supplement, especially with regards to attention problems.

Recently exciting new research has come to light involving a ‘super’ form of omega-3, which can help Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and depression sufferers.

What makes this super omega-3 so unique is that it contains a massive 90 per cent of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) per capsule and no docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Although DHA has proven benefits for heart health, EPA appears to have specific benefits that improve mood and behaviour... and because EPA and DHA ‘compete’ for incorporation into brain cell membranes, a supplement of pure, high-dose EPA is more effective for brain health than one containing both EPA and DHA.

Omega-3 changing lives

In a recent Swedish study, involving 92 children suffering from ADHD, half the children were given the super omega-3 supplement containing a high dose (500mg) of pure ethyl-EPA each day; the other group received a placebo.

After just five weeks, teachers noted remarkable improvements in the behaviour of the children who were taking the EPA supplement, especially with regards to attention problems.

These improvements continued week after week. By around 10 weeks, the response had reached its maximum level, but the improvement was maintained in the EPA group until the end of the 15-week study.

In addition to helping children with ADHD, this super omega-3 could also be beneficial for depression sufferers. In a double-blind study comparing EPA and Prozac (fluoxetine) for adults with major clinical depression, both treatments were equally as effective in controlling depressive symptoms after eight weeks. In the Prozac group, 50 per cent of patients experienced a significant improvement, compared with 56 per cent in the EPA group...

Better still, the manufacturers of PLUSEPA use an extraction process that maintains the quality and chemical integrity of the EPA. It guarantees no detectable amounts of mercury, pesticides and PCBs. The gelatine capsules used are designed to resist the breakdown of EPA by stomach enzymes, are Halal certified and also contain vitamin E to prevent oxidation of the EPA.
