Could Mammograms Be Doing More Harm Than Good?

Date: 26/02/07

1) Do mammograms reduce the risk of breast cancer death? 2) Are mammograms even safe?

A feud between two researchers has sparked controversy in the European medical community. Hopefully this feud will escalate and rage long and loud because it brings two very important questions to the attention of the mainstream - right where they belong:

1) Do mammograms reduce the risk of breast cancer death?
2) Are mammograms even safe?

I have a friend fighting breast cancer and I know it's a common cancer, but I've declined mammograms. The risks are too high... I'd urge all women to take a look at the Nordic Cochrane Website. This group of eminent scientists have been calling for govts to tell women the truth about mammograms for years. In the end they decided to produce their own brochure, "The risks and benefits of mammograms" - it's at their website. Also, this same group published some research in the MBJ recently. Examining data over 10 years they compared 2 groups of Danish women - one group having mammograms, the other completely unscreened. The group having mammograms had a 1% fall in mortality - the unscreened group had a 2% fall in mortality!! More women who have screening die from breast cancer! Clinical breast exams are not evidence based - there is no evidence they bring down the death rate, BUT they cause unnecessary biopsies and some think they're a risk factor for cancer. Breast self-exams have been OUT for years. They cause biopsies, but don't help. What's left? Isn't it funny how we think we must do something these days rather than watch for symptoms and lead a healthy lifestyle? I'm following the late Dr Joan Austoker's breast awareness program - just taking note of the look and shape of my breasts every day after showering. Anyone interested in women's screening might enjoy Dr Joel Sherman's medical privacy site under women's privacy issues you'll find lots of informative articles and discussion. Most women are unaware that pap smears are also controversial...did you know 1000 women need cervical screening for 35 years to save ONE woman from cervical cancer? Or, that annual screening will send 95% of women for colposcopy and usually some form of biopsy over her lifetime. Some women will be left with problems after treatment for false positives - over-detection is the huge hidden downside of this screening. Most women also don't know cc is rare, always was... Two yearly - 77% of women. If women choose to have screening they need to do their own research and find out what they're agreeing to...then they need to set an agenda that offers protection from cancer and false positives and unnecessary and potentially harmful treatment. LEEP and cone biopsies carry the greatest risk. Women under 25 carry very high risk for no benefit. Finland has the lowest rates of cc in the world and sends the smallest no. of women for colposcopy/biopsies (30%-55%) - they offer screening 5 yearly from 30 - 5 to 7 tests in total. As a very low risk woman I have always declined screening, but sadly, I didn't get this information from my Dr. My Dr is paid to reach screening targets for smears and I think that puts our doctors in a conflict of interest situation. Anyway, knowledge is the only way to protect ourselves and make the right decisions for us.
