Thermography a Safe and Very Effective Alternative to Mammograms

Date: 19/09/08

In an ideal world breast cancer should be detected at its very early stages, before the tumour has grown to a sufficient size. Unfortunately, for the tumour to be detected by a mammogram or physical examination it must’ve grown for several years, and achieved more than 25 doublings of the malignant cell colony. You guessed it: By the time you get a warning from your mammogram the tumour may already be at a growth-stage where it is too difficult and too late to treat.

I read through some reader-feedback on our website this morning and came across this remark: “Thank you for explaining the ugly truths about mammography which mainstream medicine for the most part chooses to ignore while making every attempt to bully patients into having mammograms.”

What struck me most was the words ‘...bully patients into having mammograms.’ And I had to ask myself: Bullying? ...What are the alternatives to this invasive, painful, ineffective and unsafe procedure?

In an ideal world breast cancer should be detected at its very early stages, before the tumour has grown to a sufficient size. Unfortunately, for the tumour to be detected by a mammogram or physical examination it must’ve grown for several years, and achieved more than 25 doublings of the malignant cell colony. Enter THERMOGRAPHY.

Many doctors recognise that inflammation is a precursor to numerous diseases such as cancer, arthritis, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Early detection of inflammation may help you prevent the detection of many negative health conditions. You can reduce inflammation with dietary changes, nutritional supplements, antioxidants, detoxification, stress reduction, and more. This is where thermal imaging or thermography comes in to the picture...

This tool creates a digital map of your body that illustrates heat patterns. This may detect some condition or abnormality. It uses an infrared camera that scans and measures your body surface temperature, presenting the information as a digitized image, called a thermograph. These thermal images are analyzed for abnormalities that may be signs of disease in your body. Additionally, since your body is thermally symmetrical if normal, thermal asymmetries can indicate problems.

Benefits, benefits, benefits

Thermograms will be of particular interest to women but men will also find benefit from this tool, as it not only specialises in breast imaging but also excel in early- stage disease detection. For example:

* Arthritis: Thermography not only helps detect early signs of arthritis but can also differentiate between osteoarthritis and more severe forms like rheumatoid. Effective early treatment strategies can then be implemented, before you experience further degeneration.

* Heart disease: screenings can assess heart function and detect inflammation in the carotid arteries (which may be a precursor to stroke and blood clots). Earlier detection of a heart problem may save your life.

* Neck and Back Pain: Thermal pain patterns ‘light up' white and red hot on a scan. You can get relief faster and begin restorative care that targets the affected area more precisely.

* Dental Issues: A thermal scan will indicate temporomandibular joint (TMJ), gum disease, or an infected tooth, as white or red hot.

* Sinus Issues & Headaches: Significant heat in your forehead or sinus region revealed on a thermal scan is an indicator that these systems in your body are not functioning properly.

* Immune Dysfunction, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue: The immune system correlates to the T1 andT2 areas of your spine - high levels of heat in that region can indicate immune dysfunction. On the other hand, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and aching joints are just a few complaints that correlate to cool patterns seen at this area.

* Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): This condition is often misdiagnosed. For instance, you may think you have CTS, yet the scan shows your neck is referring pain from a different affected area. This will help you get the most appropriate treatment.

* Digestive Disorders: Irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and Crohn's disease are often visible with thermography. If you're able to address these conditions early on, you'll find that health restoration is much more likely.

* Other Conditions: Including bursitis, herniated discs, ligament or muscle tear, lupus, nerve problems, whiplash, stroke screening, cancer, and many, many others.

Back to the ladies

Mammograms look at anatomical changes in the breast, as they detect masses or lumps in the breast tissue. On the other hand, thermograms look at vascular changes in the breast, as they detect blood flow patterns, inflammation and asymmetries. Thermography can detect irregular patterns in the breast, conditions that occur before a noticeable lump is formed. In some cases, such as inflammatory cancer, there are no lumps to be detected by self-exam or mammogram. That's why adding thermography to your annual health routine can help with early detection. You'll increase your chances of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages.

Unlike most diagnostic tests, thermal imaging is, not painful, non-invasive and quick – your multi-image exams usually take less than 15 minutes. Plus, it makes no contact with your body - no compression (such as what you experience with mammograms) and it emits absolutely NO radiation.

Voila! No radiation, no squashing, no mashing and bruising. Early detection, quicker diagnoses and prevention and a healthier happier you.

I sincerely hope that this e-alert will help you find alternative measures to a procedure that should really be as comfortable and easy as possible. As always we invite you to post comments on our articles. Perhaps you have a question; why don’t you post it on one of our discussion forums or start your own discussion – other readers will certainly join in. Your comments and suggestions help us to bring better information to you to ultimately create a healthier and better life.

finally, a well presented article BUT I did not see a mention that Thermography supposedly detects irregularities in advance by 8-10 yrs! further: setting up a thermographic camera in surgeries/hospitals/health centres is around £25K against your usual mammographic machine of over £1M. Would be a good saving for the NHS BUT you need well trained thermographers to read the images collected. Having formed an IR EARLY DETECTION Group (seeking Charity status)I am in the process of obtaining a thermographic camera to present to a chosen medical centre from a professor of medicine in Germany, who will give us an accurate report of the images within 24 hrs of mailing the images across. Wish us well, once set up with website etc we shall be going around with our 'begging bowl' to obtain such a camera.

Having had breast cancer and a lumpectomy and subsequent treatment 13 years ago, including an augmentation this year, for which i am grateful. I would be pleased to know, how we can persuade the powers that be to allow us to have thermography as a right, having had experience of both and not really relishing any further "squishing" of an already battered boob.

Paddy Fairhead Posted 19/09/2008

As my sister died at the age of 43 from - initially - breast cancer which led to bone cancer, I have a mammogram every 18 months. I am now 62 and would like to know where I can find a facility which used thermal imaging as an alternative. I live in Essex.

Karen F Posted 19/09/2008

Thank you for sharing a much more humane alternative to mammograms. I should also like to know where in the UK/Oxfordshire, I can find a thermographer as I dread my turn of being bullied too.

Celia Posted 19/09/2008

I would like to know where I can have thermal imaging done in Surrey. This seems to be a marvellous invention and if it is cheaper than mammography I cannot understand why facilities have not already been put in place by the NHS - unless they HAVE, and we haven't been told about it.

Leila Posted 19/09/2008

I would also like to know, like Paddy Fairhead, where I can find a facility which used thermal imaging as an alternative. I live in Middlesex. I would be there like a shot. Just give us the information and we will do the rest.

I'm very concerned for my wife who is due her first mammogram in October. Her mother died at 43 from breast cancer. Every Although Doctor I ask tells me there is more evidence for mammograms than for any other test and reading the article I don't see any stats or the evidence. I would far prefer her to go the route of thermography and no doubt she would too but her understanding of English is limited and my Russian isn't so good therefore it would be difficult to convince her against a mammogram. Are there any stats, evidence or research papers I can get hold of? Thanks

Jacqueline Smart Posted 19/09/2008

Very interesting...where could I go in Dorset?

Kevin Posted 20/09/2008

Ingrid - I would love to find out what you've done to see if we can follow in your foot steps in our local areas? Once your charity is setup, maybe you'll look into getting additional thermographic cameras throughout the country? Either way, I wish you all the very best and can't wait to see your website when it's up (perhaps it'll be posted here?).

Good to read about an alternative to mammo. called thermography. I would certainly suggest it to my wife and I might apply on myself. Could you give us an idea where they are installed anywhere in Europe. Sound extremely and excellent way to mammo or other machines. Thanks hope to hear from you.

There is a private clinic in Harley Street, London, which is a 'centre of excellence' for thermography. More details from www.chironclinic.com

Martin Stivers Posted 20/09/2008

I want to commend you on the fine article. You have perfectly explained the process and the benfit of thermogarhy in the medical community. Myself and my partner a D.O. have touted the benefits and safety of this over-looked and much malined state of the art technology. For the past 2 and 1/2 years were have been proving everthing you mentioned in your article with outstanding results, not to mention several hundred very thankful women and even a few men, yes they get breast cancer too. Keep up the good work, if we can aid your getting this valued message out more and to younger women, please let us know. I can be reached at Thermal Imaging Consultants, LLC, Reno NV- Thank you again for the valuable information to the women of the world.

hadiza Posted 21/09/2008

Where can one get this done?

Ania Sagajllo Posted 23/09/2008

I too have just come across this alternative to mammograms, and am relieved!! I've also just looked for a website and Centre in the UK where they offer these scans. Please take a look at this website (I am not affiliated with them) as they offer scans at a reasonable price. www.wholisticmedical.co.uk/DITI/ditifaq.html Yes, these people are in London but they may know where else in the UK offers this scanning technology so it's worth a call. As this is a real alternative to radiation and early detection I would travel to London once a year to do this if there was nowhere else. I hope this information is useful.

William Bradford Posted 24/09/2008

Go to www.meditherm.com and click on the 'locations' tab for a list of the Meditherm clinics all around the world. Remember that Thermography is a test of physiology and is adjunctive to anatomical tests if required.

Lis Singer Posted 12/11/2008

Would also like to know where to find a clinic for thermography in the Essex area, if anyone can help I would be very grateful!

William Bradford Posted 20/04/2009

To all those enquiring about thermal imaging especially for breast screening, go to www.meditherm.com and click on the locations page. There are DITI clinics all around the UK and Europe with Meditherm trained Thermographers. The service is there for all to use.

Verica Peacock  Posted 05/05/2009

Like Paddy and Leila, I live in Essex and would like to know where I can have thermography.

Marion Shaw Posted 04/08/2009

You can get thermal imaging done in Harley Street, London but I don't remember the address.

Jane Roberts Posted 14/10/2009

The two in Harley Street are mentioned above - Chiron Clinic, and Wholistic Medical. Both have informative websites. They use different techniques.

A Middleton Posted 14/10/2009

I have had a thermograph which shows inflammation in my left breast. I did the responsible thing and went to my GP who was very supportive and referred me to the hospital service. They have been very negative (at best) and downright hostile (at worst) about the thermograph as a system of detection. Ultrasound and manual examination have yielded no results and they tell me my only alternative now is a mammogram, as I am told this can detect types of cancer that are not detectable by ultrasound/ manual examination, mammogram being precisely the proceedure I wanted to avoid. Any suggestions on what to do next would be gratefully received.

I used Meditherm and was very happy with the service. The web address is meditherm.com/breast health. I used a consultant in Bedfordshire and I understand there is one in Cambridge as well.

Lorna Yates  Posted 14/10/2009

My first scan is next week and I am very concerned. Are there any thermogram facilities in Northern Ireland?

Moira Port Posted 14/10/2009

I recently had a mamogram and it was painful ,awful and uncomfortable. I was concerned that some damage would be done to me as squashing the breast tissue the way they do cannot be good for anyone . Surely in these days of choice and informed consent why aren't women told of the alternatives to this diagnostic test. Thanks for the information about thermography...will my local GP be able to refer me for this instead of the mamogram in the future?

Inna McDonagh Posted 31/12/2009

Are there any facilities for DITI scan in Ireland? I live in the Republic, but Northern Ireland could do. Many thanks.

jenn Posted 07/03/2010

Is there a facility in, or around Reno, Nevada that can perform the breast thermography procedure? Your time and consideration is appreciated, regarding this matter... Have a great day...

Sue Read Posted 09/03/2010

I also live in essex and am looking for somewhere that does thermography, I am 58yrs old have endured 2 mammograms in my life and having read about them over the last few years am not having them anymore.
