When occasional leg pain turns into a chronic, daily problem, this presents a red flag that something more serious may be going on.

Intermittent claudication is a painful condition in which a decrease in blood to the legs reduces the amount of oxygen delivered to the lower extremities. The fact that the pain can sometimes be excruciating is bad enough. But if left untreated, this condition can lead to gangrene and may signal other serious health problems, such as hardening of the arteries and heart disease.

Fortunately a herbal formulation called Padma 28 has been shown to successfully address intermittent claudication. Now a new study reveals that Padma may also help facilitate the immune system to fight off viral infections.

Ancient mix
To start off, let's backtrack a little to take a closer look at those leg pains caused by intermittent claudication.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is characterised by narrowed blood vessels in the arms and legs. PAD is particularly common in people over the age of 70, as well as smokers and those who have a history of diabetes. The most common symptom of PAD is intermittent claudication.

So if you're experiencing leg pain on a regular basis and you fit into any of the three categories above, there are two important things you need to know: 1) PAD quadruples your risk of heart attack or stroke, and 2) PAD is frequently under-diagnosed, even among high-risk patients.

Previous studies have indicated that Padma 28 may reduce intermittent claudication and help reverse PAD. The key to Padma's effectiveness is a mixture of 20 different herbs that create a powerful antioxidant compound. Formulated more than 2,000 years ago in Tibet, Padma has been shown to dramatically improve the distance that intermittent claudication patients are able to walk pain-free. Research also indicates that Padma may lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, while blocking the growth of smooth muscle cells that close up blood vessel walls. Padma users report no side effects, apart from rare cases of upset stomach.

A 2001 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that a large number of PAD cases go undiagnosed. So if you're experiencing leg pain on a regular basis, talk to your doctor - especially if you're in one of the high-risk groups. And if you are diagnosed with PAD, ask your doctor or a health care provider who's familiar with herbal treatments about Padma 28.

Benefits doubled
The new Padma study appears in the journal International Immunopharmacology. A group of researchers from three Austrian medical centres conducted a laboratory study to examine the effects of Padma on human blood cells. The Austrian team found that Padma controlled levels of a body fluid substance called neopterin. Elevated neopterin levels indicate that the immune system has been activated by viral infection or disease.

Padma was also found to inhibit the degradation of tryptophan, prompting levels of this essential amino acid to rise. Tryptophan is a precursor of seratonin and melatonin, both of which play key roles in regulating mood.

Further studies will be needed to confirm this important research, but the promising results indicate that Padma's antioxidant effects may significantly boost the immune system while also enhancing feelings of well being.

Obviously we'll be hearing more about Padma in years to come as additional studies are reported. And I'll be keeping an eye out for those results.
