Candida: Which Foods To Avoid?

Date:

Candida ferments sugary foods in your stomach to produce carbon dioxide, which causes bloating and flatulence. Candida also produces alcohol and other chemicals that irritate the lining of the stomach, causing painful spasms and making it less able to assimilate food, leading to constipation or diarrhoea. These effects make Candida a major cause (although not the only one) of irritable bowel syndrome.

I was surprised to see how many of our readers have left comments on our article Candida: How To Cure Your Symptoms. The article was written back in 2001 and I thought it a good idea to look at this painful and uncomfortable condition again.

Here’s what one of readers, Patricia wrote: ‘I've been diagnosed with Candida it’s made me very depressed and I don't feel human. I think it's because I've had a lot of antibiotics over a small space of time and a sweet tooth so all of that will have to change if I want my life back.’

Candida: A quick re-cap

Candida ferments sugary foods in your stomach to produce carbon dioxide, which causes bloating and flatulence. It also produces alcohol and other chemicals that irritate the lining of the stomach, causing painful spasms and making it less able to assimilate food, leading to constipation or diarrhoea. These effects make Candida a major cause (although not the only one) of irritable bowel syndrome. And as it spreads through your body, Candida also produces increasing quantities of toxic by-products, which can cause a host of physical and mental symptoms.

If many of the symptoms and factors listed below apply to you, it is likely that you're suffering from Candida:

· Bloating and discomfort, especially after meals.

· Griping pains in your lower abdomen.

· Constipation or diarrhoea.

· Fatigue or muscle weakness.

· Muscle or joint pains, or arthritis.

· 'Brain fog', feelings of unreality or memory loss.

· Thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm or fungal infection of your nails.

· Urinary tract infection or vaginal discharge.

· Depression or tearfulness.

· 'Low' immune system and frequent infections.

· Sensitivities to foods, tobacco smoke, chemical odours or perfume.

· Cravings for sugar, bread or alcohol.

· Symptoms worse on damp, muggy days or in damp, mouldy places.

The first step in healing this condition is to get diagnosed. This is easier said than done since many mainstream doctors don’t recognise Candida as a serious and debilitating disease and often write its symptoms off as thrush or urinary track infection. But thankfully, there are doctors out there that will hear your plight and that will work with you to put your life back together. Your job is to find one that will listen to.

Candida: Start with what you eat.

The next step is to look at your diet and isolate any foods you may be sensitive to. In his book, The Yeast Connection, Dr. William Cook provides a list of foods to avoid completely. These are:

· Sugar: Refined sugar is thought to encourage the growth of Candida yeast. Foods containing refined sugar include: white sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, maple sugar, molasses, date sugar, turbinado, raw sugar, demerara, amasake, rice syrup, sorghum. Read labels carefully because there may be hidden forms of sugar. When reading the label, words to watch out for include sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, glycogen, glucose, mannitol, sorbitol, galactose, monosaccharides, polysaccharides.

· Fruit: Fruit contain natural sugars that are thought to support the growth of yeast. Fruit that are typically eliminated include fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruit and juice.

· Yeast: Foods that contain yeast are typically eliminated. Yeast-containing foods include: Baker's yeast, Brewer's yeast, and any other types of nutritional yeast. Baked goods raised with yeast such as breads, rolls, crackers, bagels, pastries, and muffins should also not be eaten.

· Foods containing gluten: Gluten-containing foods include wheat, barley, and rye. This includes products made with these ingredients such as bread and pasta.

· Vinegar: Includes all types of vinegar, such as white vinegar, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, and balsamic vinegar, and any food made with vinegage, such as mayonnaise, commercial salad dressing, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, BBQ sauce, shrimp sauce, soy sauce, mustard, pickles, pickled vegetables, green olives, relishes, horseradish, mincemeat, and chili sauce.

· Mushrooms: Mushrooms are typically not allowed on Candida diets.

· Peanuts, Peanut Butter, and Pistachios: Peanuts, peanut butter, and pistachios are thought to have mould contamination, which is why they typically aren't allowed on Candida diets.

· Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages are believed to encourage the growth of yeast. All forms of alcohol are typically eliminated, such as red wine, white wine, beer, whiskey, brandy, gin, scotch, any fermented liquor, vodka, rum, and all liqueurs.

· Coffee, black tea, cider, root beer: Includes regular coffee, instant coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and all types of black tea (including "fruit flavoured" black tea). Cider, root beer, and other fermented beverages are also typically eliminated.

· Aged, mouldy and processed cheeses: Roquefort and other aged, mouldy or blue cheeses should be avoided at all cost and so are processed cheese such as cheese slices, cream cheese and cheese sticks.

· Processed, dried, smoked, and pickled meats: This includes smoked salmon, pickled herring, sausages, bacon, hot dogs, pastrami, bologna, sandwich meats, salami, corned beef, pickled tongue, and kolbassa.

· Packaged, processed, and refined foods: Canned, bottled, packaged, boxed, and other processed foods containing yeast, refined sugar, refined flour, chemicals, preservatives, or food colouring.

Of course, it is extremely disheartening to read through a list of foods to avoid only to realise that almost all the ‘good stuff’ is bad for you. Keep in mind that the above list is only a guideline and by working with your doctor or natural health practitioner, you can do a food sensitivity test and carefully work on a food-elimination diet.

In next week’s follow-up alert, I will look at which foods to incorporate in your diet for this condition. In the meantime, your comments and suggestions are as always most welcome which in turn can help us and the rest of the daily health community understand this condition better.

I just must let you know that your notes on candida albums are the most informative and helpful I have come-across. My 22 yr old daughter has this condition - her GP tells her "there is no such thing" and offered no help whatsoever. we had retrieved some info online but yours was THE most comprehensive, full and incredibly useful (it is not always so helpful to be told what one CANNOT eat - your info was so much more than this). I alwys enjoy your emails, and must just add that I hope you can keep-up this good-work. very best wishes from Jackie , Greenwich, London UK

I did suffer this same problem last year and my Doctor had no answers for me excet to give me Moviacl. It went on for a month, being constantly bloated, l already have an intolerance to wheat and gluten, but have not radically ejected them from my diet.Which l feel l will have to do now, the prospect of going Low carb is scary. I will end up eating myself alive. can you give me some blanced books on the subject of Candida and IBS problems please.

As I write this, I am sitting in my office chair in pain and discomfort!! I have suffered with the bloating and inflated stomach since I was about 18yrs old (I'm now 27) and have been to the doctor, only to be told that I am constipated, I have IBS, I should eat slowly blah, blah, blah, yet after reading this web page I am now 99% certain that I have candida in my gut. I plan to follow the no carb diet and see how I get on. Thank you for informing us of this condition.

Lauren Posted 10/03/2010

This is awesome! Why can't doctors be this informative?

Melissa Posted 20/03/2010

I have been on the candida diet since July of 2009. I have been taking Nystatin and clotramazole since June of 2009. Since Decemmber of 2009 I have added Ketoconazole. I'm down to 109, I look like death warmed over and I feel awful..I started adding carbs in Decmember to gain weight and haven't gained a thing. I just had my blood tested for Auto Immune Defiencies and Thank goodness I do not have that problem..Why won't this go away?

Katie Posted 21/04/2010

I discovered I had this problem after having colonic hydrotherapy to try and relive what i thought was IBS. During my treatment a lot of yeasty mucus was removed which helped me alot. I would reccomend a course of Colonic hydrotherapy to anyone!

I've had bloating, gas, diarrhoea, discomfort and frustration about not being able to digest like a normal person for YEARS - since elementary school actually! I've been gluten-free and diary-free, but that never seemed to do the trick. I started the Candida diet 3 days ago and already I feel way better. The diet sucks at first b/c, besides the fact that I'm eating chicken and veggies for every meal, I REALLY crave sugar. In these first stages, not even fruit is allowed, and it's really hard. But I feel worlds better than I did even a few days ago. It's amazing!! I was the condiment queen, so no condiments is really hard too. The only things I could think of to use as condiments were guacamole and salsa without the vinegar. Not bad. Anyway, I'm so thankful to be feeling better. This is much like the Maker's Diet. God knew what He was talking about.

sylvie Posted 29/05/2010

i am trying to do this diet, and i am really struggling, i gave up the beer, three weeks ago which was massive for me, i am very proud of myself, but i find it so hard with bread, and not having anything sweet, i crave it so much but i really want to do it, i have been eating loads of raspberries and blueberries, is that wrong too? but i suffer terribly with rectal itching (dont laugh) i had terrible headaches at first when i stopped drinking i need more inspiration

I live in Eureka Ca,a small community with few choices in terms of Physician let alone a Naturopathic one. Where can I find a Physician who can help me? I am sure I am suffering from candida overgrowth and have been for over ten years. I have all but a few of the symptoms listed. I don't know where to start.

Tish Posted 15/09/2010

Hi there, I'm experiencing an unusual and drastic change in myself from last Wednesday as I woke up. I've been feeling like I'm.absolutely disconnected and unfocused from the world, lacking significant concentration with a sudden change I'm my vision (although optometrists and gps have done tests and all have proven to be fine ).. I've been feeling so disengaged that it almost feels impossible to have a conversation with anyone even, and everything seems to look fuzzy and let's just say definitely the same as before Wednesday.. I've linked my symptoms to something ive seen on the net that seems not to be a medical term which is a "brain fog".. Many online forums suffering from this seem to gave closely and almost exactly matched my symptoms. Also, brain fog has said to be caused from candida over growth. I've spoken to many gps so far, and all claim that candida has nothing to with spreading in the body, and that they are simply found in certain parts of the body. Around march, I've had a swab test done which found to have high growth of candida therefore it makes me strongly believe that my current problem stems from this candida ocergrowth (as I definitely didnt treat it once I was informed). Whilst I've done some tests to validate that nothing is wrong with my system inside, I'm very sure something is due to the candida although every doctor hasn't clearly indicated me to not even mention such ideas as they cannot be a cause to my condition. They all think there is no such thing as brain fog even as theres no medical term, but I'm very certain the symptoms I feel are strongly linked to this condition, moreso after reading forums and opinions of people and especially when it claims to have linked to candida on every website. Please help me.. I'm really not feeling well, feel constantly depressed with my mental state (i cant pick up and grasp things easily like i used to and every step of the day seems like i need to make immense effort to carry out, when i've been a brilliant student with a natural sharp mind) I am willing to try anything that I feel is linked to my problem...please do help me.. please..

I thought I would add my bit to the site as well. I have had candida for about 30 years but it took me many years later to accept it... I had IBS when young and always sufered from constipation but it wasnt till I started getting " wierd " symptoms and was really ill that I started to look for answers to my "strange" illness... with me its a cycle , if I behave and watch what I eat, I am fine for months even years but if I go over the top and back to old ways of to much wine and refined foods etc BANG!! Boy do I suffer... I try to stay on a natural remedy course with things like caprylic acid and pau d arco but I have had diflucan on 3 occasions now which seems to help immensly and then go back to natural products , I dont know if I will ever be" cured " but I live in hope in the mean time people watch what you eat and keep your colon clean

i have severe skin rash all over my face back neck arms and stomach and this all started after i started taking the birth control pill. i was only taking it for just 3 months and noticed my skin becoming very itchy and hives started to develop almost every day. could this be a result of candida? im at my witts end, its driving me crazy and its damaging my self confidence dramatically. my energy levels are also so low as im constantly tired... help!!! its been nearly a year!!

I have loose and light stool and terrible tummy rumblings. My doctor does not care about me. I am sure I have candida; I am an old lady of 73. I need help

B5 Posted 27/11/2011

I have IBS and had a lot of bloating and gas. The first few days I took the Lady Soma Candida product, I thought I was going to die. It made me nauseous and have diarrhea, but that was just the detox symptoms. They soon cleared, and I noticed I had less bloat and gas. I did the product 3 times a day for a little over a month and felt great. I have no bloating and have hardly any craving for sweets. I now take the product about one time a day for maintenance. Highly recommend this one.
