Swine Flu: Only Another 749,983 To Go For The UK Pandemic Predictions To Be Accurate
Date: 15/07/09
Perhaps I should commit to some accuracy, since few media sources are prepared to do so: That is, 16 Swine Flu-related deaths (meaning all 16 victims had serious underlying health problems) and one patient in Essex who died earlier this month being the only person in the UK without underlying health problems to die of Swine Flu.
I don’t know about you, but this whole Swine Flu ‘pandemic’ is starting to do my head in. This week has seen the death toll of Swine Flu Deaths in the UK totalling at 17, since its outbreak, with the recent deaths of Chloe Buckley and Dr Michael Day.
Get your facts straight mate
Since the ‘outbreak’ of this ‘pandemic’ the general public has been clouded with misleading and inaccurate information. Allow me to serve a few examples:
Fine, perhaps all can be forgiven because, after all, it was in the wake of a pandemic and people were scared and unsure of what was going to happen. Perhaps our health minister and his department also panicked... Yet, three months later the situation hasn’t really changed. Allow me again to serve a few examples:
I leave that with you, with my final thought on the number inaccuracy being that I think the time has come for someone to step forward and say things as they are without the percentages, the escalation and the elaborations because frankly, it’s exasperating.
Prevention is key
Most infuriating is not the fact that we plain folk don’t really know what is actually going on, and that we are misguided in this mess. The entire UK has now heard a gazillion times that we are amidst a pandemic, right? But we are also told to keep these flu deaths in ‘perspective’.
This comes after the death of the young school girl Chloe Buckley with Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the British Medical Association's GPs’ Committee, saying: ‘We must remember that every year there are deaths from complications of seasonal flu - this is unfortunately inevitable with any strain of influenza.’ Great, so you scare us with numbers and nonsense and then you sober us up by telling the truth... just to add perspective?
So, perhaps the best angle to this whole Swine Flu palaver is to say: This year the flu is going to be a wee bit tougher than last year.
How do we solve this problem?
Don’t, I beg you, go to the government websites for guidelines, because it is deplorable. The most information on there are things you already know with an added healthy dose of Tamiflu propaganda. You won’t however find common sense, like how to strengthen your immune system with better nutrition and healthy habits.
So, since they are not doing it, we at the Daily Health are happy to oblige, because the truth is we – the general population – have a very big say in whether or not another pandemic will happen. How? By acting preventatively in applying excellent hygiene and stepping up our nutrition and strengthening our immunity.
Don’t be a victim
If you think covering your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze is the only prevention against Swine Flu then this bit is just for you.
Start by applying excellent sanitation. Keep all communal areas, such as your bathroom, toilet and kitchen, spotless especially areas where food is being stored and prepared because it is a breeding ground for all kinds of nasty things. Check out this link if you want to know how to protect yourself further from all kinds of bacteria and strains.
Wash your hands before and after meals as well as when you were out and about in public or on public transport. Needless to say, do the same when you’ve paid a visit to the toilet. If you need to use public facilities try to use ones that are clean and well maintained, like ones in restaurants.
If you are aware of friends and relatives feeling unwell or coming down with something, try not to visit them. The same applies for when you feel unwell; stay indoors and nurture yourself at home until either you feel better and recovered or it has become necessary for you to visit a doctor.
Statistics from previous pandemics show that good immunity is key in determining the virulence of a flu virus. The same is also true about our current situation, 16 of the 17 fatalities had underlying health problems – which shows that they had compromised immune systems which made them much more susceptible to other infections.
Of all the nutrients, vitamin A is one of the most essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Vitamin A is found in cod liver oil, oily fish, cheese, whole milk and eggs. Other important nutrients are vitamin C and E and zinc, which is a natural antiviral. Start by eating balanced healthy meals and supplement with extra nutrients where necessary.
Caught a light sneeze
If you are unfortunate enough to catch the flu, there is a range of alternative remedies you can try before you reach for Tamiflu.
While we all are waiting to ride this wave of misinformation and media hysteria out, I wish you all to be safe, clean, level headed and nutritious.

Get your facts straight mate
Since the ‘outbreak’ of this ‘pandemic’ the general public has been clouded with misleading and inaccurate information. Allow me to serve a few examples:
- On 28 April 2009, Mexico’s health minister Jose Angel Cordova confirmed the seven Swine Flu deaths which occurred in Mexico at that point. This exact amount was verified by Vivienne Allen, from the World health Organization’s (WHO) patient safety programme.
- However on this side of the Atlantic, Alan Johnson UK’s Health minister chose to ignore the WHO and Mexico’s health minister and ran with some fabricated number, stating that the death toll in Mexico at that point was 89. That is a difference of 82 people...
- Alan Johnson also told MPs that the symptoms of Swine Flu were mild and that all UK patients have made a full recovery. Yet, despite his statement, his own department declared the next day that 750,000 people in the UK could die of Swine Flu. That is three quarters of a million people dying from mild flu symptoms in the UK alone... Also, bear in mind that annual seasonal flu kills around half a million people every year worldwide... If you consider the fact that Swine Flu symptoms are the same as ordinary seasonal flu (since it is a flu strain virus), the numbers don’t add up.
Fine, perhaps all can be forgiven because, after all, it was in the wake of a pandemic and people were scared and unsure of what was going to happen. Perhaps our health minister and his department also panicked... Yet, three months later the situation hasn’t really changed. Allow me again to serve a few examples:
- A month ago, the numbers looked as follows: Official reports said there were about 30,000 cases worldwide and 164 deaths. The mortality rate was similar to that of normal forms of flu and most victims only suffered a mild illness. That sounds all good and sobering as well as realistic. Less scary...
- But then 20 days ago the numbers looked like this: Laboratory tests showed that there were 9,718 confirmed cases in the UK. This was just behind Mexico, with 10,262 cases. The US was in the lead at that point with 33,902 confirmed cases. Just looking at the last set of numbers, it shows that in ten days the amount of cases in the world had risen to 53,882. It makes sense, after all it is a pandemic...
- However, 15 days later, this has been reported: Data from 100 GP surgeries around England showed that about 27,000 people per week were being diagnosed as having a flu-like illness. Of these, an estimated 8,000 will have swine flu. The number of flu cases being seen every week works out at 51.9 per 100,000 people. However, in London the rate is 180 per 100,000 - just short of the 200 cases that denotes an epidemic. In the West Midlands the rate is 140 per 100,000 cases.
I leave that with you, with my final thought on the number inaccuracy being that I think the time has come for someone to step forward and say things as they are without the percentages, the escalation and the elaborations because frankly, it’s exasperating.

If you are unfortunate enough to catch the flu, there is a range of alternative remedies you can try before you reach for Tamiflu.
- High-dose vitamin C is an effective fighter against flu viruses along with lysine.
- Elderberry is another successful antidote and has shown to clear flu symptoms five times faster than when it is left untreated
- Echinacea is an effective immune booster and can help ward off the worst flu symptoms if taken early enough.
While we all are waiting to ride this wave of misinformation and media hysteria out, I wish you all to be safe, clean, level headed and nutritious.
