Giving Your Body a Break From The Festivities
When I use to overdo something as a child, my grandmother always warned me with these words: ‘Be careful, you are going to burn the porridge’.
I don’t want to be the sour puss at the party, but judging by how my belly expanded over the last couple of days, it struck me this morning that I may be over doing it... again (and I am certainly not the only one).
Simple detox
The break between Christmas and New Year is an ideal time to apply a simple detox – especially now that we’ve all had our Christmas turkey and stuffing (and a lot of it!).
Of course the idea is not to start a full-on new health regime (unless you are up for a challenge). Instead, it is a simple detox that will give you’re a body a break from all the festivities.
Here’s how you can go about it:
- Try and have a few evenings of going to bed earlier than normal. This will allow you to get a good night’s rest for a few days which in turn will reduce your stress levels and will make you look refresh and well rested before the New Year.
- Have at least half a pint of water in the morning when you wake up, before you eat breakfast or have coffee. This will ‘wash’ and detoxify your body before you start feeding it again. If you want to take things a step further you can stock-up on Cranberry juice (rich in vitamin C) which will provide your body with loads of nutrients and antioxidants.
- Try to eat your dinner before 7 at night. This allows your digestive system to digest the food before it naturally slows down at the end of the day. (This is also a handy tip when you try to loose weight.)
- Give your body a break from any alcohol, fatty foods and refined sugars especially before the New Years Eve festivities. It will give your liver and kidneys a healthy break through eliminating impurities from the blood in the liver and kidneys. To reduce toxins in your body, try to cut down on the following too: cigarettes, coffee, eating foods with saturated fats and refined sugars (cola and ketchup contains a lot) - these act as toxins in your body and hinders your energy levels and performance.
- Don’t forget your five-a-day portions of fruit and veg.
- If you have a gym membership, you can pay a visit to the sauna- facility or perhaps book yourself a special treatment at a spa. The sauna is widely used by many cultures as a regular part of detox. It is a great method of removing chemicals build-ups in fat cells. Sweating also regenerates your skin.
- Do a bit of exercise. To exercise until you sweat is the ultimate way to detox. Not all of us will be up for this during the festive season, so by simply having brisk walk for about 30 minutes a day is an excellent way to ‘wake’ your body up and get the blood flowing through your system. Whilst having your walk you can also concentrate on your breathing: Deep, slow and conscious breathing is the key to oxygenating your lungs, bloodstream, heart and whole brain.
Applying these simple and easy steps will help your body cope better with the strains of the festive season and it will also help you to start the New Year looking and feeling rejuvenated in spite of having a good time.
