Don’t Trust The Mainstream When It Comes To Heart Disease Prevention

So, if say, for sake of argument, I’m 56 and I have normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels, I must still take a drug that can cause rhabdomyolysis — a statin side effect which also happens to be a life-threatening condition that destroys a large amount of muscle tissue, causing kidney failure...
Kidney failure aside, I could also develop Type 2 diabetes or cataracts, liver dysfunction, cancer, Alzheimer’s and mental confusion... to name but a few additional statin side effects.
I wish these guys would give it a rest... and while they’re at it, perhaps they could also get their facts straight before making bold statements that only succeed in misleading the public!
I’m talking about the mainstream and their ridiculous drive to make us all believe that cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are our only saving grace from an early death!
Statins a must for all over-55s
Recently Professor Sir Nicholas Wald, Director of the Wolfson Institute at Barts and the London Medical School, came out with this old chestnut: Everyone over 55 should be offered statins to cut their risk of heart attacks and strokes, no matter how high their cholesterol or blood pressure readings...
This is based on the findings of a study, published in the open access journal PLoS ONE, which compared the effects of two screening programmes on a theoretical population of 500,000 people.
Prof. Wald claims that patients would not be taking the drugs needlessly, because almost everyone of a certain age could benefit from having lower blood pressure or cholesterol, no matter what their levels are to begin with!
We’ve all heard this before and to be frank, these guys have the wrong end of the stick!
Firstly, these findings are based on a theoretical population of 500,000 people... not real people... So, we’re basically talking about numbers on paper, right?
As we all know, a theoretical population will show no side effects... of which there are plenty when it comes to taking statins.
Secondly, saying that everyone of a certain age could benefit from having lower blood pressure or cholesterol, no matter what their levels are to begin with, is just codswallop!
I know, I know, all of the above won’t matter because at least I will have no blood pressure or cholesterol problems and my risk of heart disease and stroke will be much lower... saving the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) buckets full of money...
Sheer and utter madness
See, the researchers also believe that if screening by age alone was introduced (which is what they’re suggesting), it could prevent as many as 100,000 heart attacks and strokes each year in England and Wales.
Nonsense!
If you look at primary prevention (use of statins in essentially healthy people in the hope of preventing a first heart attack or stroke), even the most positive studies suggest that more than 100 patients need to be treated to prevent one death! And, taken as a whole the evidence suggests that in the primary prevention setting, overall risk of death is not reduced by statins... so no matter how many people are treated, not one single life will be saved...
Where do these guys get their facts from?
Oh yes, I forgot, their findings were based on a fictional population... where in reality, very few lives would be saved...
If you’re looking for more facts and less fiction, look no further. The Cholesterol Truth is dedicated to uncovering the truth behind the great cholesterol con and the mainstream’s heinous push to promote statins as the be-all and end-all when it comes to cardiovascular disease prevention.
This week, Dr. John Briffa, our contributing editor, writes about how so-called ‘healthy’ cholesterol-lowering sterols could be damaging your heart.
