How Statins Could Soon Replace Antibiotics...

The statin brigade is at it again... Researchers from the University of Edinburgh are turning to cholesterol-lowering statins to help boost immunity and lower the risk of infection. Or at least that’s what they’re hinting at with the findings of their latest study.
Here at the Healthier Life, we have stacked-up evidence to show that too low levels of cholesterol can actually increase the incidence of heart attacks and stroke... debunking the ‘statin cure-all’ approach!
Sometimes you can't help but laugh out loud when you hear what mainstream medicine has come up with this time...
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh are turning to cholesterol-lowering statins to help boost immunity and lower the risk of infection.
Yep, it’s crazy, I know... and with everything we know about the dangerous side-effects of statins, you're probably wondering ‘Why do they even bother?’... but hey, that’s the mainstream for you...they're certainly persistent if nothing else!
Cholesterol nibbling invaders
The study, led by Professor Peter Ghazal, found that the body naturally lowers cholesterol levels during an infection because viruses like to “feed” off it. The researchers claim that when the body falls prey to a viral infection, a hormone in the immune system sends a signal to lower cholesterol levels to blood cells in an attempt to “starve” infectious invaders.
The researchers concluded that by limiting the production of cholesterol with statins, viruses will be prevented from thriving in the body from the onset!
For goodness sake, not only has cholesterol been made out to be the top health villain over the past 20 years, but now it is also being labelled with harbouring the enemy by feeding it...
Why don’t these guys give it a rest?
Worst still, the researchers go so far as to say that statins have the potential to strengthen the immune system and may be used in the future as an alternative to antibiotics!
What?!
Cholesterol strengthens the immune system
In fact, these findings contradict previous studies that showed how higher cholesterol levels were linked to a lower rate of infection.
A US study from the University of Minnesota, published in the Journal of Holistic Medicine, showed that cholesterol functions as an antioxidant, protecting the body from free radicals and therefore strengthening the immune system.
Cholesterol is a precursor to vitamin D, which plays an essential part in immune protection. It is also a precursor to corticosteroids, hormones that protect the body against stress - which is known to suppress the immune system. The Minnesota study reviewed the records of 19 studies, examining the causes of death in more than 68,000 cases. The results of these studies showed many patients who died of infectious diseases also had low cholesterol levels.
To determine whether low cholesterol caused infection or if infection caused low cholesterol, the researchers looked at more than 100,000 healthy individuals over a period of 15 years. Those who began the study with low cholesterol levels suffered from more cases of infection than those with higher cholesterol levels.
The Edinburgh study is not the first one to claim that statins can help in the fight against infectious disease. Previously, we reported on a study from the University of California, San Diego, in the US, which claimed that statins could also help to fight off severe infections like pneumonia!
Yet, these findings again contradict previous studies that have shown that giving statins to elderly patients to prevent pneumonia actually increased their risk of getting the disease by a staggering 61 per cent!
It is clear that this latest study from Edinburgh (like so many other studies conducted before) is designed from the onset to prove that cholesterol can only be harmful... and we all know what follows: The great statin 'cure-all' push...
Once you start popping those little pills you are at high risk of experiencing dangerous side effects like liver dysfunction, acute kidney failure, cataracts and muscle damage (myopathy)... to mention but a few.
