Polypill - Think Twice Before Taking This Dangerous Drug Cocktail

The polypill is an all-in-one combination of statins, aspirin and ACE inhibitors, designed to lower cholesterol, blood pressure and help prevent atherosclerosis. Those advocating this three-in-one version of the Pharma five-a- day, are touting it as one of the most important pharmaceutical developments in the past 50 years. According to them, it will help prevent heart attacks and strokes, and ultimately save thousands of lives...

That's not all, some of these wisecracks even go so far as to say that everyone over the age of 55 should take a daily polypill for the rest of their lives as a precautionary measure... even if they don't have high blood pressure, high LDL 'bad' cholesterol, or any other indications of heart problems... I can clearly see the pound signs in their eyes…

Seeing some sense

Recent developments indicate that there may be a division in the Polypill camp, because a professor of medicine at Georgetown University in Washington, in the US, is now saying that to medicate large swathes of the population is not only a waste of money but also poses a health risk as a result of over-treating people.

Finally! Someone is seeing some sense... and, somewhat surprisingly, it's someone in the mainstream, called Prof Allen Taylor. Prof Taylor added that the cost of treating those not at risk of having a heart attack or stroke – both in financial terms and in terms of side-effects – has to be considered.

This is exactly what we've been saying since 2003, because the side effects you can expect from combining a statin with an ACE inhibitor and aspirin are hideous. Here's a sampling to put you in the picture:

** Statins: kidney damage, liver damage, muscle pain, fatigue, joint pain, headache, diarrhoea, stomach/abdominal pain.

** ACE inhibitors: persistent cough, dizziness, skin rash, swelling of face and throat, loss of sense of taste, and birth defects when used by pregnant women as early as the first trimester.

** Aspirin (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug): stomach and intestinal bleeding, easy bruising, hearing difficulty, ringing in the ears, nausea, tiredness and dizziness.

Now, who in their right mind would prescribe a drug to lower blood pressure if the patient has normal blood pressure levels to begin with, or a statin to lower cholesterol if they already had healthy cholesterol levels? What kind of sadist would subject patients to all the above potentially dangerous side effects, when it is completely unnecessary?

One man certainly won't have a problem doing this: Prof Salim Yusuf of McMaster University in Canada, one of the polypill's leading proponents. Commenting on Prof Taylor's remarks, he said that the polypill is essential to help combat "the biggest epidemic [heart disease] society in its history has ever faced". Prof Yusuf added that a mass campaign for the polypill was necessary and argued that instead of saying 'lifestyle first and drugs next', the mainstream's approach should be 'drugs are the basis'.

Ignoring natural alternatives yet again!

That kind of suggestion is pure baloney and totally outrageous.

It amazes me that the mainstream can be so frank about treating people with pharmaceutical drugs as a primary prevention, when there are much safer alternatives available to promote heart health and ward off cardiovascular disease that won't put you at risk of serious side effects like this dangerous prescription cocktail will…

In April 2010, Japanese researchers, from the Osaka University, found a reduced risk of heart failure in men, and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke in women, whose diets contained high amounts of the B vitamins folate and vitamin B6. The study showed an association between increased dietary folate and vitamin B6 intake and a reduction in mortality from coronary heart disease, stroke and total cardiovascular disease in women.

Vitamin B6 is present in potatoes, fish, eggs, spinach, bananas, beans, seeds, red meat and nuts. Good sources of folate include liver, dried beans and other legumes, green leafy vegetables and asparagus.

Another alternative is Pycnogenol — a pine bark extract — that has the potential to counteract all the major cardiovascular risk factors simultaneously. These include high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also acts as an anti-clogging agent.

Apart from that, research published in 2005 in the journal Evidence Based Interactive Medicine, showed that Pycnogenol and Coenzyme Q10 (the essential heart nutrient that's depleted by statins) enhance cardiovascular health synergistically.

Yep, Big Pharma, all those years spent in laboratories concocting a mixture of dangerous pharmaceuticals have actually been a complete waste of your time, because Mother Nature has once again been one-step-ahead with alternatives that have been around for thousands of years.
