Cholesterol – How Big Pharma Puts Profits Before Patients’ Health

With more and more controversy building around cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, one would be forgiven for feeling like a lamb entering a lion’s den when you next visit your doctor to discuss your heart health. Especially, since researchers recently also dreamed up the discovery of ‘super bad cholesterol’, called MGmin-LDL cholesterol... and they’re planning to treat it with a widely-prescribed diabetes drug, metformin... This being the case, before you know it, you’ll be trapped in the Big Pharma funnel of taking a dangerous cocktail of drugs (all with their own list of side effects), spiralling you into a life of ill-health and possibly more diseases...
In our previous post on The Cholesterol Truth, we told you
how some doctors are sucked in by the great statin-push,
prescribing statins to all over-50s as a ‘blanket gold
standard’! In some cases, they’re dishing out these drugs
without even taking blood tests to confirm a diagnosis for
raised cholesterol levels!
This is downright ridiculous and the fact that these drugs are dominating the market is a clear indication of the power of Big Pharma’s marketing machine... and the great incentive schemes lining the pockets of those in the mainstream who have fallen for it.
Something’s seriously wrong
Some might think that our take on this unstoppable statin craze, is the stuff science-fiction horror films are made of. The truth is that in reality, things are far more disturbing... I’m talking about mass medication on a global scale, with research showing that if you’re taking a statin drug, the odds are almost 100 to 1 that you don’t need it!
How is this possible, you may ask...?
Previously, we highlighted the fact that one of the largest statin drug trials, called JUPITER (which initially showed such astounding results in favour of statin drugs), turned out to be completely biased. Yet, since the initial results were so positive, the mainstream quickly jumped on the bandwagon and before you could say ‘liver dysfunction’ statins became the new ‘wonder drug’ promising a cure-all for almost every disease under the sun... ranging from a pneumonia preventative to lowering the risk of diabetes.
Closer investigation revealed that almost all of the JUPITER researchers were guilty of receiving financial incentives (from AstraZeneca, makers of the super-strong statin, Crestor, and sponsors of JUPITER), therefore committing themselves to “selective outcome reporting”. This means that they only disclosed results that fell in favour of statins, thus painting a much rosier picture than would’ve been the case if they’d included a full list of the drug’s horrendous side effects.
The safety aspect of these drugs is probably the biggest concern — along with the fact that Big Pharma and their cronies have turned a complete blind-eye to the terrible side effects of their ‘wonder drug’...
Here’s what one reader wrote to us recently:
Research has shown that muscle pain and weakness occurred in up to one-third of those taking statin drugs, with moderate or severe muscle pain occurring in 100 to 300 women (out of 226,000 participants)... but it doesn’t end there.
The journal The Lancet recently reported on a 2010 study, which showed that for every 225 patients taking statin drugs for longer than 4 years, one case of Type 2 diabetes occurs. Previous research has also linked statin use to cataracts, liver dysfunction, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s and mental confusion... to name but a few additional statin side effects.

A case in point, is the recent research from Stamford University, in the US, which found that those taking pravastatin (a statin drug sold as Pravachol) and paroxetine (an anti-depressant sold as Paxil) simultaneously, are in danger of developing full-blown diabetes!
Pravastatin and paroxetine, are both commonly prescribed drugs, which are often taken together... especially since depression has been linked to statin use... So where you start on statins and develop depression as a side-effect, you may also end up with diabetes... Can you imagine the thousands of people who’s lives are affected in this terrible way? What’s next? A good dose of metformin... on top of statins and an antidepressant?!
So, before you take your doctor’s advice on taking statins (especially if he or she has not even taken a blood test), visit The Cholesterol Truth. There you’ll find an honest and unbiased approach to keeping your heart healthy (without taking drugs), as well as the truth behind the great cholesterol con...
Better yet, invite your doctor to see what we have to say and then consider all the options available to you... before you start taking dangerous drugs that may end up doing much more harm than good.
In his latest post on The Cholesterol Truth, Dr. John Briffa (our contributing editor) reveals how doctors no longer calculate the ratio between ‘good’ HDL and ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol when testing blood cholesterol levels... instead, they only focus on LDL levels... and if those levels are high, you are bound to go home with a statin prescription... putting you right at the top of the Pharma Funnel!

still have severe joint and muscle pain. This was
after only taking the statin for 3 months. Can you
refer me to any articles/web sites/books on how to
cure this problem or a path to recovery? I'm almost
desperate as nothing is helping so far. I take
Ibuprofen every day just to take the edge off.”
