Statins Now Claim To Protect Against All Causes Of Death...
Date: 01/07/09
Statins even cut heart risk in the healthy’ screamed the headlines this morning. Clearly, the truth is no substitute for a good headline... and clearly, the drug companies are beginning to up their stake in their attempt to squeeze more profit from our ailing health care system.
‘Statins even cut heart risk in the healthy’ screamed the headlines this morning. Clearly, the truth is no substitute for a good headline... and clearly, the drug companies are beginning to up their stake in their attempt to squeeze more profit from our ailing health care system.
Statins: Their take on statins
Firstly, the newspaper article claims that the ‘latest’ research (meta-analysis) say that statins cut heart attacks by 30 per cent, even in healthy people. It even went on to suggest that statins could also reduce death from ALL causes by 12 per cent...
But, hang-on, this is such old news... Back in November last year, after a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine the medical mainstream already started to suggest that people with normal cholesterol levels may benefit from taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), even more than those with elevated cholesterol do!
Perhaps more attention should have been paid to all the numerous studies proving that statins are dangerous to our health, and that side effects are severe and in some cases life threatening. Which brings me to their second ‘slip-up’ and a major one in my eyes:
We are still being lied to and mislead!
Statins: Their fact file
* More that six million adults are taking statins in the UK. (That’s a lot of people being taken for a ride...)
* Statins are a class of enzyme-inhibiting drug which dramatically reduce cholesterol levels. (Enzyme- inhibiting? Bells are already ringing!!! It kills off Coenzyme Q10 in your body which is essential for cellular function and energy production as well as heart health. You did not see that one coming?)
* Statins work by lowering levels of ‘bad LDL cholesterol, which can lead to furring of the arteries. (Funny thing is no mention is made of the ENHANCE STUDY – a two-year trial that compared the effects of Zocor (a statin) with Vytorin (a combination of Zocor and Zetia – a drug that blocks cholesterol absorption). Results: Zocor and Vytorin both reduced LDL cholesterol, but in spite of the length of the study, there was no "significant difference in changes in intima–media thickness" (that is, in the thickness of artery walls) in the Zocor group compared to the Vytorin group... Yet if you dig a bit deeper, the study actually found that "There was a slight increase in the mean intima–media thickness over time in both groups." Yep! Devastating! Both drugs lowered LDL, and with both drugs, on average, subjects' arteries became NARROWER, or furred-up a bit more... Uncanny I’d say.)
* Although side-effects are rare, they can include muscle pain and damage to the kidneys and liver. (Good thing the kidneys and liver are minor organs, so let’s damage them while furring-up our arteries and killing off CoQ10. At least we won’t get heart attacks – especially when we are already healthy... Get real.)
This was probably the best quote in the entire article and one that reeks with a vested interest in the drug companies. Heart ‘expert’ Prof Malcolm Law said that everyone over the age of 55 should be given statins the same way that everyone would be offered a vaccine against swine flu if it becomes serious... Swine flu vaccines and statins? Now there’s a nasty friendship. At the rate governments and medical authorities are trying to dish out both, someone somewhere is due to make a pretty penny... at the expense of public health.
Statins: Our take on the real facts
If you read the article I am referring to, I hope you had the good sense to treat it with a fair amount of contempt, like I did. If however you thought for one moment that you may have to be put on statins, ‘Just in case’, allow me to point out a few facts about statins. You know, the stuff the newspapers won’t tell you about.
Dr. Beatrice Golomb, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of UC San Diego's Statin Study group cited nearly 900 studies on the adverse effects of statins. They are:
* One of the biggest problems with statin drugs is that it inhibits C0Q10 production which can have the following adverse effects: congestive heart failure and chronic fatigue (energy production), hepatitis, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis and neuropathy (loss of cell wall integrity).
* Cognitive problems and peripheral neuropathy (disorders of the nerves of the peripheral nervous system) are also widely reported.
* A spectrum of other problems, ranging from blood sugar elevations to tendon problems, can also occur.
Dr. Beatrice Golomb and her colleagues published the results of their review in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs. It provides the most complete picture to date of reported side effects of statins, showing the state of evidence for each. The paper also helps explain why certain individuals have an increased risk for such adverse effects above others.
In a previous alert, we also listed the following side effects that may occur with the chronic use of statin drugs:
* Neurological side effects: Amnesia, confusion, forgetfulness, and disorientation, increase of any pre-existing senility and persistent loss of short- term memory
* Muscle pain: You may feel this pain as a soreness, tiredness or weakness in your muscles. The pain can be a mild discomfort, or it can be severe enough to make your daily activities difficult. You may also develop joint pain, muscle ache and fatigue.
* Liver Damage: Statin use could cause your liver to increase its production of enzymes. If left unchecked, increased liver enzymes may lead to permanent liver damage. Liver problems may develop without symptoms which is why people who take statins should have their liver function tested about six weeks after they start taking a statin.
* Digestive Problems: Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or constipation can occur after taking a statin.
* Rash or flushing: You can develop a rash or flushing after you start taking a statin and these may occur sporadically.
* Migraines and headaches: If you are prone to either you may find that statin use will trigger your headaches and migraines more often and they can become more severe. Dizziness and flu-like symptoms are also common side-effects.
And as if that is not quit enough value for your 7 pence per day statin, all those over 55 and healthy may also get the added ‘benefits’ of the following:
* Dolichol inhibition includes a broad spectrum of behavioural and affective disorders.
* It suppresses selenoprotein which is strongly linked with muscle pain.
* Statins also disrupts normal phosphorylation pathways which can result in enhanced tau protein production and release. There is a puzzling association between statin use and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. Tau is the protein prominently deposited in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and also has been observed in other neurodegenerative diseases.
Still think side-effects with satins are rare?
So, ‘experts’ say that more access to this cheap drug could save hundreds of thousands of lives while also saving the NHS billions. How? If the masses are given a pill, that has such high risks and so many dangerous and life threatening side-effects, how do they save billions? By not treating the side effects or by ignoring them?
How do they save lives?
If you are taking statins and you have not been warned about the side-effects then you cannot miss out on our special report, giving you all the information your doctor won’t tell you about the Great Cholesterol Con and the dangers of statins. Also, learn everything you need to know about the heart-critical nutrient which statins are destroying in your body.
