Heart Disease
One Way NOT to Protect Yourself From Pneumonia This Winter...
Date: 19/11/10
Statins... just hearing the word makes my skin crawl.
Last week we reported on a study published in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, which suggests that taking statins in higher doses not only leads to even lower levels of "bad" cholesterol but will also reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes.
This weak, the ridiculous drive to push statins as the ‘wonder drug’ of this millennium continues with another study from the University of California, San Diego, in the US, revealing that statins can also help to fight off severe infections like pneumonia!
Contradicting previous studies
The San Diego research team was led by Victor Nizet, professor of paediatrics and pharmacy, and Christopher Glass, professor of medicine and cellular and molecular medicine. The study revealed that statins help the body to rid itself of infectious microbes by activating and boosting bacteria-killing cells, which lowers the risk of pneumonia and sepsis.
However, these findings contradict previous studies which have shown that giving statins to elderly patients to prevent pneumonia actually increased their risk of getting the disease by a staggering 61 per cent!
A 2009 study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), not only found that the risk of severe pneumonia soared by 61 per cent in elderly patients who took statins, but also that pneumonia risk was 26 per cent higher in people using a statin than in those not on the drug.
Dr. Sascha Dublin, head researcher of the study, said that even though she is a supporter of statin drugs, she has found that statins may have gotten some unearned credit for health benefits that they don't actually have, including preventing pneumonia.
At the time, Dr. Dublin also spoke out against suggestions from the medical mainstream that expensive randomized controlled trials should be conducted to see if statins can prevent or treat infection. She added, "Our study indicates that such trials would be an ill-advised use of limited research funds at this time."
Ridiculous list of disease prevention benefits
One cannot help but wonder what is really behind the medical mainstream’s obsession with statins?
According to a report published by Forbes Magazine in 2008, statins have raked in a quarter of a trillion dollars since they were introduced two decades ago! Published reports say that up to 30 million Americans and 6 million Britons are taking statins, which were originally designed to lower cholesterol. However, since they hit the market and their earning potential was realised they’ve been credited with all kinds of other crazy ‘health benefits’.
Over the past few years, we’ve reported on the following far-fetched claims made by so-called medical experts, saying statins can also:
* Prevent Alzheimer’s disease
* Dramatically reduce heart attacks and strokes
* Substantially reduce the risk of bone fracture in the elderly
* Treat diabetes, metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X
* Lower blood pressure
* Reduce death from ALL causes by 12 per cent
* Reduce the risk of some cancers
One simply needs to look at all the known side-effects of statins to realise that any possible benefits (most of those listed above are unsurprisingly completely misleading!) come at a massive price to your health.
For example, the treatment of diabetes with statins seems completely off the mark since statins can cause blood sugar elevations.
Other widely reported side effects are cognitive problems and peripheral neuropathy (disorders of the nerves of the peripheral nervous system) which makes it highly unlikely that statins could help prevent Alzheimer’s.
In fact, research has found a puzzling association between statin use and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and also Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
Apart from this, most of our readers know that cholesterol is not the real enemy when it comes to heart health. It is the underlying causes of inflammation!
How uncanny, that now, just as winter starts creeping up on us, all of a sudden statins are being pushed as our saving grace against infections like pneumonia...
I guess, with the public showing no interest in getting the H1N1 vaccine because it is dangerous, Big Pharma has to fill its pockets somehow... so they dreamed up a new added benefit for statins...
Very clever guys, but I, for one, am not fooled...
The media is even worse and is partially responsible for creating this monster. Always quick to report on the ‘new’ benefits linked to statins, they’re not so quick to point out the numerous and potentially dangerous and life threatening side-effects this drug can cause...
