The findings of a recent study, published in the journal The Cochrane Library, it seems that the medical mainstream may soon acknowledge that millions may be taking statins needlessly.
The results of the study concluded that there is no “strong evidence” to suggest that statins reduce coronary heart disease deaths among those who have not suffered a heart attack or other cardiovascular events in the past, and urges “caution” among doctors who prescribe them.
This is exciting stuff!!
For the past 16 years we’ve had it drummed into us about how ‘miraculous’ statins are. Some experts in the medical mainstream even wanted to add them to our drinking water... heck, they nearly even got added to junk food... ready to be served with our burgers!
Now, that picture is gradually changing... statins the ‘wonder drug’ may soon become an 'unwanted drug'.
Here at the Daily Health we’ve been campaigning against the over-prescription of statin drugs since they were first put on the market. With the findings of a recent study, published in the journal The Cochrane Library, it seems that the medical mainstream may soon acknowledge that we had a point.
All lies and fancy folly
The study reviewed data from 14 trials involving 34,272 patients, comparing statins against placebos or usual care.
The results of the study concluded that there is no “strong evidence” to suggest that statins reduce coronary heart disease deaths among those who have not suffered a heart attack or other cardiovascular events in the past, and urges “caution” among doctors who prescribe them.
And with that, the medical mainstream is left in deep division!
One of the researchers, Fiona Taylor, from the Cochrane Heart Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "This review highlights important shortcomings in our knowledge about the effects of statins in people who have no previous history of cardiovascular disease. The decision to prescribe statins in this group should not be taken lightly."
Amy Thompson, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “It is still unclear whether statins provide any real benefits for people without heart and circulatory disease and who are at low risk of developing it.”
However on the other side of the growing debate are the die- hard statin fans, such as Prof Colin Baigent, of the Clinical Trial Service Unit at Oxford University, who said the latest study findings are out of date and called statins one of the great medical success stories of the last two decades, which have prevented many thousands of deaths.
In a similar vain, Professor Sir Nicholas Wald, of Queen Mary University London, inventor of the "polypill" — a combination of heart-protecting drugs which includes statins — thinks the Cochrane team have got it wrong. He added: "This study is completely unsatisfactory. Their conclusions aren't justified by the data they present and are at variance with other studies which show the benefit of statins in lowering heart disease risk."
It’s almost like watching a tennis match!
Recently we launched The Cholesterol Truth, which is dedicated to exposing the truth about the dangers of taking cholesterol-lowering statins as well as debunking the myths about cholesterol — touted as public enemy number one by the medical mainstream.
We also got an expert in the field on board, Dr. John Briffa, who contributes to The Cholesterol Truth on a weekly basis.
This latest study sparked so much controversy that Channel 4 invited Dr. Briffa to join their news panel and to give his views on this matter.
