Millions of people have high cholesterol, but only a small fraction of them understand why triglycerides are a dangerous part of the cholesterol picture, according to a new survey of doctors and patients.

And guess who the doctors blame for their patients' unawareness about triglycerides? Here's a hint: They don't blame doctors.

Heart health : Blame game

Lipids are fats, and they're essential for life. Your cell membranes would be lost without lipids. But when levels of triglycerides (a type of lipid) are elevated, you've got trouble. When triglycerides bind to carrier proteins, lipoproteins are created and may leave fat deposits in coronary arteries. Several studies have shown that high triglyceride levels sharply increase heart disease risk, even when no other risk factors exist.

I have been advised that my cholesterol level is 3.7 which is very good but my triglyceride level is 5.7 which is not good. I have high blood pressure which is controlled by drugs. I have lost a stone and a half in weight and cut out a lot of fats but before this my levels of triglyceride was 2.7. So what happened?

Your cholesterol level includes HDL, LDL and Triglycerides. I think you may have misunderstood something.

I have had numerous blood tests and my cholesterol level is fine although my doctor will never tell me what it is. I have gained about 4 stone in the last few years although I watch my diet, have cut out alcohol, chocolate and cut down on most other things that I think could be causing this. I have now started getting yellow blemmishes around my eyes, which my doctor informs me is fat and nothing to worry about but there is a history of heart disease in my family could you please explain this to me thanks.

Don't panic about Cholesterol as they wish you too. Infact they are not measuring cholesterol just your density lipoproteins both low and high - wrongly named 'bad' and 'good'. These also transport fat soluble vitamins. I've treated someone with a level of 5 on trigyclerides with simply raw Garlic and Artichoke and now their only 1.62. You need to address Liver dysfunction which can only be done by Liver foods and specific herbs like Artichoke and Milk Thistle.
