Earlier this year, a study of 8,300 people with high blood pressure, who did not respond to their medication, found that 37 per cent of these patients actually did not have high blood pressure at all! It turns out that you could be your own worst enemy as soon as you walk into the doctor's surgery. According to the results of the study, published in the journal Hypertension, the 'white-coat-effect' was behind many diagnoses of high blood pressure. Meaning that instead of having high blood pressure, you may have been wrongly diagnosed simply because you were nervous while your blood pressure was taken.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), on average 9 out of every 100 adults will die from a heart attack, while another 21 will suffer from a heart attack but survive. These statistics make worrying reading but the good news is that this situation needn't be a foregone conclusion. The AHA goes on to claim that if these adults took steps to reduce their cholesterol levels, only 5 would die from a heart attack and only 14 would have a heart attack and survive. While cholesterol is a well-known problem the steps you need to take to lower it are simple and, as the AHA report, can be highly effective.

When it comes to determining the cause of high blood pressure, modern medicine remains largely in the dark. The majority of high blood pressure cases are still considered a mystery and are labelled essential hypertension which as many a medical student has joked in the past means: Essentially, we dont have a clue. And while its true that hypertension drugs do reduce high blood pressure, regardless of the cause, theyre still not correcting the underlying problem. Not to mention that nearly all of them have multiple unwanted side effects ranging from fatigue to impotence.

According to a recent study conducted in Spain, an increased intake of vegetable protein and cereal fibre could reduce the risk of hypertension by up to 50 per cent.

Close your eyes and think of a spoon.

In the UK, about half of people over 65, and about 1 in 4 middle-aged adults, have high blood pressure.

Resistance is still high, but natural medicine breakthroughs in the world of conventional medicine are happening more and more frequently - often in unexpected places.

Most of us are aware that we have too much salt in our diet.

Correct me if Im wrong, but we take painkillers to help us dont we?That is as simple as it should be, but as an HSI member you are probably well aware of the side effects and risks associated with taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
