D-Mannose Plus: Ease Urinary Tract Infections Without Antibiotics

Date: 19/12/06

Antibiotics are the main form of conventional treatment for urinary tract infections such as cystitis, however they can cause additional problems. Fortunately a new product called D-Mannose Plus has been shown to alleviate an incredible 90 per cent of UTIs within just one to two days and without side effects...

It is estimated that 20 per cent of women in the UK, primarily between the ages of 20 and 56, will suffer from cystitis, and each year 5 per cent of women go to their doctor because of urinary tract infections (UTIs) (Ref. 1).

Symptoms can be extremely distressing and include frequent urination that is irritating or burning and a persistent urge to urinate even after your bladder has been emptied. This can be accompanied by painful cramps in your lower abdomen.

In more serious cases fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can also occur. Worse still, women who have suffered one UTI are very likely to experience a recurrence from time to time.

Antibiotics are the main form of conventional treatment for UTIs. While they are usually effective at clearing up urinary infections they can cause additional problems such as diarrhoea.

Fortunately a new product called D-Mannose Plus has been shown to alleviate an incredible 90 per cent of UTIs within just one to two days and without side effects (Ref. 3). It contains D-Mannose, a simple carbohydrate derived from the bark of the spruce tree. Cranberries have also been added to the formula, as there is a strong body of science supporting their beneficial effect on urinary tract health.

D-Mannose Plus tricks the harmful E.Coli bacteria into leaving your body

To understand how D-Mannose Plus works it is necessary to understand how UTIs develop. Ordinarily, bacteria do not thrive very well in the acidic environment of the urinary tract, and even if they manage to survive they would normally get flushed out in the urine.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli that cause up to 90 percent of urinary infections get around these defence mechanisms by attaching themselves to mannose molecules that are naturally produced by cells lining the urinary tract (Ref. 2).

E.Coli bacteria are covered with tiny finger-like projections. At the very tips of these projections is a glycoprotein (a combination of carbohydrate and protein) called a lectin that has the capability to bind to mannose molecules inside the walls of the urinary tract (Ref. 4).

Molecules of mannose produced inside urinary tract lining cells act as receptors, inviting the E. coli to attach, and allowing them to stick to the tissue. If it wasnt for this attraction between lectin and mannose, any E. coli that had ventured into the urinary tract would be unable to stick to the slippery surface and would be washed right back out in the next flow of urination.

When D-mannose Plus is taken as a supplement, almost all of it spills into the urine via the kidneys where it gets rid of uropathogenic Escherichia coli by beating them at their own game. When free D-Mannose is present in the bladder, the E. Coli appear to detach themselves from the surface mannose molecules that line the urinary tract and get fooled into attaching to the free standing D-Mannose instead. They are then swiftly flushed out in your urine.

Unlike antibiotics, D-Mannose Plus doesnt cause unpleasant side effects like diarrhoea and thrush

According to Dr John Parks Trowbridge, author of The Yeast Syndrome (Bantam Books): D-mannose is exactly the right treatment for bladder infections caused by E. coli.

Unlike conventional antibiotic treatment, D-Mannose Plus helps eliminate uropathogenic Escherichia coli without killing a single bacterium, which means that it does not affect the millions of friendly bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract. Because of this D-Mannose Plus does not produce the unwanted side effects of antibiotics such as diarrhoea, constipation and nausea.

In addition, many women who take antibiotics develop thrush due to friendly bacteria being killed off in the vagina, allowing yeast organisms to proliferate. D-Mannose Plus avoids this complication too.

What to take for best results

The recommended dosage for D-Mannose Plus powder is to 1 teaspoon dissolved in a glass of water or juice taken every 2 to 3 hours. This usually clears an infection in one to three days. However, even if the infection subsides within 24 hours, supplementation should be continued for three days at a reduced dose to 1 teaspoon 3 times a day to ensure that all the bacteria have been removed from the urinary tract. D-Mannose Plus is pleasant to take and has no known side effects.

It is important to be aware that D-Mannose Plus is only effective in cases of UTIs caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. If after a couple of days of using it symptoms do not abate, it is likely that E.Coli is not the cause of your UTI, in which case a GP should be consulted as soon as possible.
