From what I've heard, kidney stones are so painful that you wouldn't want to wish them on your worst enemy.

If you have ever been unfortunate enough to pass a kidney stone, your eyes are probably watering as you recall the excruciating pain of the ordeal.

But once again, help is at hand from the depths of the Amazon rainforests.

Kidney stones can cause extreme pain

Kidney stones are formed when urine becomes too concentrated due to chronic dehydration and various kidney disorders. This can cause sand-like deposits of calcium mixed with oxalate (a salt) or uric acid in the kidneys. When these deposits grow too large, thats when the real pain begins as they are difficult to pass through urination.

So how do you know if you have kidney stones? You may feel a pain in your abdomen, see blood in your urine, but the most telling symptoms will be the extreme pain you experience as the stone works its way down your urethra (the tube that leads from the kidney to the bladder). It makes me shudder just thinking about it!

According to Patient UK, about 3 in 20 men, and 1 in 20 women in the UK develop a kidney stone at some stage in their life.

The usual conventional treatment is to dose the patient with strong painkillers until they pass the stone. If you are a long time HSI member you will have read many past e-alerts on the dangers and side effects of over-the-counter painkillers. These include liver and kidney impairment, gastrointestinal conditions such as bleeding and ulcers, and an increased risk of hypertension in women.

Quebra pedra the stone-breaking herb

A botanical from the rainforests of Brazil is known as quebra pedra (Phyllanthus niruri) or stone breaker by the locals who have traditionally used this herb to get rid of kidney stones.

A study conducted in Brazil by the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo, found that a liquid extract of Phyllanthus niruri effective in preventing calcium oxalate crystals. The herb did not induce any side effects even in high doses. This lead the researchers to conclude that this herb is an attractive natural alternative to treat kidney stones.

Not only does quebra pedra block the stones from forming, it can help you expel them. Quebra pedra has a proven antispasmodic effect which helps prevent muscle spasms and relaxes the smooth muscle within the urinary tract making it easier to pass the stones.

Also known as chanca piedra (the Spanish name) this herb is so successful that its sold as a prescription product in France. Here in the UK it is available from many Internet sources.

When I write about remedies that originate from the Amazon rainforests, it makes me think about how valuable that part of the world is to us, on so many levels. Hopefully in time pharmaceutical companies will recognise this value and put resources into protecting this veritable treasure chest of natural remedies.

But before I get on my soapbox, lets get back to kidney stones.

Dietary changes and omega-3 may help prevent stones

In the e-alert How your diet could prevent kidney stones (19/11/03), I mentioned how diet can affect kidney stone recurrence. A low-protein, low-salt and low-calcium diet produced dramatic results.

A study of 88 participants in the e-alert New hope for kidney stone sufferers (18/11/03) discovered that supplementation with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, can help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

If you have had a stone before, drink plenty of water to keep your urine diluted. Hopefully with this information you will avoid the painful experience of passing stones.

3 weeks ago I had nasty kidney pain and I started using Chanca Piedra from proper initiative. Now I am nearly cured, actually the pain started diminishing in the first 24 hours from using it. George Smadu, Australia
