Testofen - A Safe And Effective Alternative To Viagra

Date: 17/09/07

Fenugreek seed is a basic ingredient used in most curry dishes but this spice is much more than a simple food flavour enhancer. Since ancient times it has been employed medicinally both internally and externally (as a poultice) to aid a wide range of conditions including wounds, abscesses, arthritis, bronchitis and digestive problems. It also has a long history of use by traditional Chinese herbalists for treating kidney problems affecting the male reproductive tract.

Now, exciting new research findings have revealed additional therapeutic properties linked to the spice, which include an ability to regulate blood glucose levels and lower elevated cholesterol levels. Not only that, it has also been found to benefit men suffering from a reduced libido.

The latter was the main inspiration behind the recent launch of a new fenugreek-containing product called Testofen, which has been formulated primarily with mens health in mind.

A safe and effective natural alternative to Viagra

Fenugreek helps improve a flagging libido by increasing levels of the male hormone testosterone, which naturally begins to decline after the age of 30. This action is important as low levels have not only been found to lower libido and reduce erectile function but can also cause infertility, bone loss, increased fat mass, fatigue and depression.

A newly identified ingredient in fenugreek called fenuside seems to be responsible for increasing testosterone levels. It has been found to have a dual mechanism of action in this respect in addition to increasing testosterone, it appears to act like testosterone, by binding to testosterone receptor sites and creating testosterone-like activity. For this reason, Testofen has been formulated to contain 300mg of fenugreek extract with a 50 per cent fenuside content to help boost libido. In animal studies, Testofen has been found to be just as effective at enhancing libido as sildenafil citrate better known as Viagra. But unlike the drug it doesnt come with a long list of harmful side effects including headaches, facial flushing, dizziness, indigestion and visual disturbances. At present, studies are underway to determine how Testofen might help men with reduced libido, the results of which should be available later in the year. HSI promises to keep you fully updated on the findings as soon as they become available.

Testofen helps improve the ratio of body fat to muscle mass

Testofen also helps build lean muscle mass and reduces body fat. Sixty men (aged between 18 and 29) were enrolled in a double-blind, randomised, placebo controlled study to evaluate Testofens effect on free testosterone and body composition. Half the group was given 300mg of Testofen twice a day, while the other half was given a placebo. The participants undertook regular resistance exercise for a period of at least one month.

“The HSI Daily Health e-Alerts contain scattered nuggets and gems of
health and nutritional wisdom.A very useful source of information about new thinking and
innovative treatments for a wide range of conditions.” - Dr AB, FRCS

After eight weeks those taking Testofen achieved an increase in free testosterone levels close to 100 per cent. The increase in the active group compared to the increase in placebo group was almost double.

Testosterone is normally present in the body bound to Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) and albumin. Only two to three per cent of testosterone is typically found in its free state in the body. This is the bioavailable form of testosterone which is responsible for various factors like increasing libido, improving energy levels, increasing muscle mass, and reducing abdominal fat. In addition, the men taking Testofen experienced a significant reduction in skin fold thickness in the thigh and biceps regions compared to the men in the placebo group. According to the researchers, a reduction in skin fold thickness is a direct indicator of a reduction in body fat. This also indicates that the loss of fat was compensated for by an increase in muscle mass.

Proven benefits for sufferers of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes

With over 100 active compounds having so far been identified in fenugreek seed   including a volatile oil, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and mucilage its hardly surprising that the spice has so many therapeutic properties. For example, fenugreek seeds mucilaginous fibre content is thought to be the reason why the spice has been found to improve blood sugar control in patients with insulin-dependent (type 1) and non-insulin-dependant (type 2) diabetes. When combined with water, mucilaginous fibre forms a gel, which results in food being absorbed into the blood stream at a slower rate. This prevents sudden surges in blood sugar and can help lower blood sugar levels in diabetes sufferers. In addition, research has revealed that increasing dietary fibre intake decreases the bodys need for insulin.

With regards to fenugreeks ability to lower cholesterol, this has been linked to steroidal saponins (diosgenin, yamogenin, tigogenin and neotigogenin), which are present in the seeds, that appear to inhibit cholesterol absorption and synthesis. Several studies have found that fenugreek lowers high cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) levels in the blood both of which contribute to heart disease.

What to take for best results

The recommended dosage for Testofen is one tablet a day. Beneficial results are normally experienced after at least two weeks.
Contraindications: Certain medicines may interact with fenugreek so if you are on any medication check with your doctor before using it.
