When Getting Your Five-A-Day Isn’t the Healthy Option...

NHANES found that almost 45 per cent of people over 60 now take cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs, more than twice the rate in 1999. In the same age group, the study found that about 88 per cent were using at least one prescription medicine, and more than two-thirds were taking five or more... At the same time!
Dr. Qiuping Gu, the epidemiologist who led the research said “When you see such a big percentage taking five or more drugs, side effects and safety become very serious issues.”
We are all a bunch of pill-poppers!
In 1999, Americans spent $104.6 billion on prescription drugs and by 2008, this amount escalated by more than half (even after accounting for inflation) to $234 billion...
Do you see what I see?
We’re breeding a sick, drug-dependent society and this worrying trend doesn’t look like it’s about to slow down any time soon.
Getting your five a day
The above statistics come from the recent findings of a study for the National Centre for Health Statistics. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, known as NHANES, looked at the increase in the use of prescription drugs from 1999 to 2008.

Serious issues?!
It’s a disaster if you ask me.
As for those of us who fall into the 20-59 age group, according to the findings of NHANES, it is more likely that the prescription medication you are receiving is an antidepressant.
Children being targeted in the great ‘drug push’ too...
The study also found that among children under 12, more than 22 per cent were using at least one prescription drug (most commonly for asthma), and so were almost 30 per cent of teenagers.
The most commonly used drugs among teenagers were for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related conditions — with a 3 per cent increase in use since 1999.
In fact, last year in Canada alone, 2.9 million prescriptions for Ritalin and other ADHD drugs were written specifically for children under 17, and at least 75 per cent of them were for young males... Statistically that is a leap of 43 per cent since 2005!
Now that’s a pretty significant increase, which either means ADHD is turning into an epidemic or somewhere, somehow, doctors are prescribing these drugs too readily... or, perhaps society is now making a malady of boyhood itself?
A pill for every ill
In response to these shocking figures, Gordon Floyd, president and CEO of Children's Mental Health Ontario, Canada, said “It certainly suggests the drugs are being abused. There's a desire for the quick fix … the idea that – ‘oh, we'll fix this with a pill' – rather than spend a few months in counselling, is pretty appealing.”
You bet it’s appealing Gordon, especially if the value of ADHD drugs are worth annually well over $249-million in Canada alone...
According to the 2009 Annual Report of the UN International Narcotic Control Board, Canada — after Iceland and the US — is one of the world's top three consumers of methylphenidate, including Ritalin and similar drugs.
Big Pharma is certainly having a field day, since diagnosing ADHD has been a medical minefield ever since the rise of the so-called Ritalin Generation in the 1980 and 90s. With no blood test or any other biological means to confirm ADHD, psychiatrists, psychologists or a general practitioner diagnose children after a clinical assessment or, as often is the case, following behavioural reports from parents and teachers.
Sounds great doesn’t it? From the age of 12, we are all being funnelled into a life of popping pills and suffering side-effects, because as we know: All drugs come with side- effects... and in some cases, these are worse than the conditions they are designed to treat.
The truth is we shouldn’t need to take prescription medicine unless absolutely necessary, especially when there are countless natural safe and proven alternatives.
For instance, in the article Super Omega-3 Helps combat ADHD and Depression, we told you about a drug-free way of combating ADHD and depression... the research findings are extremely promising. In fact, you can be sure this all- natural alternative would be making headline news if it was a pharmaceutical drug!
