The Hollywood Blockbuster Exposing Big Pharma for What it Really is...
Date: 05/01/11
Imagine a Hollywood film exposing the pharmaceutical industry for exactly what it is really all about... All the backroom deals, cover-ups and shady medical reps offering doctors incentives for prescribing specific drugs in preference to others... it has no shame in naming the industry’s top-selling drugs like Prozac, Zoloft and Viagra… all in one film...
Not exactly what you would expect from a romantic comedy, right?
Yet, a new film out called ‘Love and Other Drugs’ does exactly this... The film’s trailer may con you into thinking that it is just another story about two love-struck strangers finding a ‘happy-ever-after’, but think again… like most other things involving Big Pharma... this film does not do what it says on the box...
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway appear in the film, which is based on former Pfizer sales rep Jamie Reidy’s book 'Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman'. In the book, Reidy claimed he was the company’s No. 1 Viagra salesman, and that he employed a comical variety of unethical tactics to make his sales.
Among them… he persuaded doctors to attend “Pizza-and Dash” events at which Pfizer would buy doctors’ families fast food in return for face-time with the physician. Reidy used the Pizza-and-Dash outings to collect doctors’ signatures, which he would then use to convince Pfizer he was working when he was actually goofing off.
In another chapter, he describes Pfizer’s internal logic for avoiding blame for the deaths of some patients who had taken Viagra. It was the exertion of the sex that killed them, Reidy claimed the company argued, not Viagra.
The big-wigs at Pfizer will doubtless cringe at the news (Reidy was fired as a sales training exec by Eli Lilly when the book was published) – but then again maybe they’ll just view it as yet another cunning marketing ploy to plug their brand name and drugs.
Never promised you a rose garden
The truth is, for thousands of people taking prescription drugs, life is rarely nicely coated with a Hollywood-ending – especially for those suffering from the side effects of cholesterol-lowering statins... when in fact, the cholesterol myth is nothing but a great big con!
Doctors and Big Pharma want you to believe that cholesterol is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.
Why? So that they can sell more cholesterol-lowering statins...
One in three people over the age of 45 in the UK - that’s 7 million people - currently take statins at a cost to the National Health Service of £450 million per year. Sales are set to skyrocket over the next 10 years.
But what you’re not being told is that cholesterol isn’t the arch villain it’s made out to be... and that all these people are risking their health, since statins come with a huge list of debilitating side effects - including heart failure and liver damage...
The truth about cholesterol
In fact, the great cholesterol and statin controversy is such a contentious issue, which has brought such a strong response from our readers, that we’ve created a separate blog, The Cholesterol Truth, which focuses on exposing the truth to the millions of people bamboozled into taking dangerous statin drugs...
The site is dedicated to those of you suffering side effects as a result of taking cholesterol-lowering drugs and to all those who seek safer, more natural solutions for promoting heart health and healthy cholesterol levels…
Unlike the film mentioned earlier, The Cholesterol Truth has no sugar coating… we say it as it is and cut straight to the heart of the matter...
Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find there’s a lot more at play when it comes to statins (and the companies that manufacture them) than you could ever possibly have imagined...
I’m delighted to announce that we’ve invited a renowned health expert to join our team of writers at The Cholesterol Truth... just to make sure we tick all the boxes. He is not only a practising doctor, author and international speaker but also a leading authority on the impact of nutrition and other lifestyle factors on health and illness, including heart disease.
Keep your eyes peeled for next Wednesday's alert when we'll reveal the new addition to our editorial team.
