With snow storms, delayed flights, cancelled trains and general disruptions playing havoc with our Christmas plans over the past few days, one would be forgiven for thinking: ‘What next? How bad can this year end?’

After a very troublesome year on all fronts - the world economy hitting rock-bottom, governments across the board failing to produce lasting and effective solutions to climate change and corporations infringing our human rights and personal freedom to choose how we want to take care of our health – many of us may fear what 2010 holds in store for us. For those who are passionate about natural and alternative medicine the threat of an uncertain future is very real and immediate.

Waking up to a 21st century nightmare

Regular readers of our alerts will know that this year in particular has been testing and frustrating for the natural and alternative medicine industry. New EU regulations threaten to eliminate and drastically reduce the effectiveness (as a result of lowered dosage amounts) of many essential herbs, vitamins and supplements commonly used today.

Such regulations will not only threaten ancient traditions such as Chinese, African and Indian medicine practices, but also the survival of the majority of small health businesses and alternative practitioners. With numerous beneficial natural products being banned within a matter of years, the real nightmare will be felt in the UK around 2011, when the public will witness the greatest infringement on natural healthcare.

If this happens we at Agora Lifestyles and the Daily Health will be gagged from telling you about the powerful healing properties of many natural supplements and treatments. In short, it will be a criminal offence!

Imagine a world without...

We will be forced to go underground as will your homeopath, acupuncture therapist, nutritionist and other natural health care practitioners.

Just imagine for a few moments a world where it is against the law to tell someone about the antibiotic and anti- inflammatory properties of Olive Leaf Extract. Or let’s say you suffer from periodontal disease and your dentist tells you the only solution is an operation and the risk of losing all your teeth, when in fact there is a treatment that is non-invasive, non-surgical and 100 per cent natural that may help you and possibly reverse your condition.

Imagine a world where organic foods have been completely eradicated and in their place, genetically modified (GM), irradiated and other unnatural foods are promoted as cheaper, healthier options. Imagine a ‘sick society’ dependent solely on artificial foods and prescription medication... This is not scaremongering or some sci-fi B- rated low-budget film. This could be the horrible ‘truth’ we wake up to when it is much, much too late. Just last month, it was reported that the first GM ‘Omega 3 Oil’ (from Soya), produced by the GM food giant Monsanto, was approved by the American Food & Drugs Administration (FDA); stating that it would provide a cheaper and more plentiful source for supplements, margarines and ready meals... Can you see how all of this can go terribly wrong?

United we stand

Instead of just reporting on the doom and gloom I want to urge you once again to join forces and stand up for what is rightfully ours: The fundamental right to use natural and alternative treatments and remedies to safeguard our health.

There is power in numbers. When I first wrote about these horrendous regulations, it seemed as if there were almost no hope for us. Now, a few months later, it would appear that there is light at the end of the tunnel with people like Dr. Robert Verkerk (Science Director of the Alliance for Natural Health) and Dounne Alexander MBE, fighting our corner with all their might. Regular readers of our alerts will already be familiar with the work of Dr. Verkerk. Dounne Alexander has been credited as being ‘one of the most influential women in the UK’ and she is a force the EU will have to reckon with, as she is on a mission to stop this catastrophe and safeguard our health from further decline.

Her own business was directly affected this year, when the ‘Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’ (MHRA) forced her to stop the production and sales of a unique product, which in 2008 was approved by the Public Health Minister for use in hospitals and hospices. Dounne believes that it could be one of the most innovative British products, with extraordinary health benefits - helping to fight against cancer, heart disease, strokes, seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, incontinence, food poisoning, allergies, skin disorders and lots more. She is currently challenging the MHRA’s decision, who has classified her product as a ‘medicine’ and not a ‘herbal food supplement’. “This has nothing to do with safety or effectiveness but all about obtaining a ‘medical license’ costing up to £250,000. Hundreds of similar businesses are being challenged all over Europe, by what looks set to be the most restrictive regulatory system ever witnessed in the Western world”, says Dounne.

And she is taking her mission to Parliament, in her own words she says, “the end goal is to urge the UK Government; Opposition Leaders; all Parliamentary Members & UK MEPs to publicly REJECT these EU Directives, Regulations & Codex Alimentarius. In its place, establish an independent Legal Framework for natural foods, vitamins and herbal supplements, in order to preserve our environment, protect health businesses/ practitioners and secure a healthier life for future generations”. Dounne (together with a growing army of supporters) is taking a stand to encourage positive change.
