How We’ve Allowed Big Pharma to Infiltrate Our Lives

Date: 01/07/11

Earlier this week, I told you about the alarming fact that thousands of people are putting their lives at risk by taking a combination of common prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The scariest part about this is that many doctors don’t take the time to discuss the implications of drug interactions with their patients... I can’t help but wonder, if Big Pharma isn’t getting completely out of hand with their so-called 'cure-all' concoctions? Or, as some may argue... well-disguised snake poison! Not only can their drugs be potentially lethal when taken in combination with other medication... they can also cause further illness, disease and, in some cases, even death?

I can’t help but wonder, if Big Pharma isn’t getting completely out of hand with their so-called 'cure-all' concoctions? Or, as some may argue... well-disguised snake poison! Not only can their drugs be potentially lethal when taken in combination with other medication... they can also cause further illness, disease and, in some cases, even death?

Smelling a rat

Earlier this month, alarm bells started going off in my head when the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that, taken in high dosages, the cholesterol-lowering drug simvastatin could actually kill you!

Simvastatin, also known as Zocor, is one of the most prescribed statins that’s being pushed by Big Pharma and their mainstream cronies to every Tom, Dick and Harry... So, you can imagine the countless lives that are potentially at risk, especially since the FDA has no plans to recall this drug, despite warning us about its risks!

Mounting evidence is proving that statins are ineffective in many cases, not to even mention harmful... as they can cause hideous side effects like kidney failure, liver dysfunction, cataracts, and muscle breakdown known as rhabdomyolosis... which can be fatal.

Another statin side effect is the development of Type 2 Diabetes. A recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), looked at 33,000 people on moderate or high-dose statins in five separate studies. None had diabetes to start with... The researchers calculated that for every 498 people who took high-dose statins for a year, an extra person would develop diabetes, compared to those taking moderate-dose statins... That’s a shocking 12 per cent increase over five years!

Is this a clever money-spinning strategy by Big Pharma to make people even more drug dependent? You take a drug to stop one disease and before you know it, you’ve developed another disease because of the drug you’ve taken in the first place..., which thereby requires even more medication to control the secondary illness!

Start joining the dots

When further news reports came through late last week, saying that the number of adults with diabetes has nearly doubled since the late 1970s, the cynic inside me really woke up!

Is it possible that the increased number of statin drugs being prescribed over the past 30 years has something to do with the increased number of people being diagnosed with diabetes?

Big Pharma’s on a roll...

Tell patients they need to lower their cholesterol — which coincidentally is not the villain the mainstream makes it out to be — and give them statins to achieve this. Statins in turn cause Type 2 diabetes, which then again raises the risk of heart disease and stroke... both of which can only be ‘cured’ by none other than the wonder drug, statins!

Or, better yet, expand the pharmaceutical net by putting patients on a drug that ‘cures’ Type 2 diabetes whilst they’re still taking statins...

Too far-fetched?

Not at all. See, while we’re still digesting the fact that the world might have a diabetes epidemic on its hands, the FDA is already reviewing a new drug, called dapagliflozin, that can effectively lower blood sugar!

And who are the developers behind this drug? None other than AstraZeneca... the same guys who made Crestor... the super strong statin!

Now, the question still remains, will Crestor and dapagliflozin have any fatal drug interactions?

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait and see because dapagliflozin won’t hit the market until 2012, and since your doctor probably won’t take the time to warn you about the possible dangers of taking Crestor and dapagliflozin together it will basically be a ‘wing it and see what happens’ scenario...

Conspiracy theory or just another case of Big Pharma greed?

I’m prepared to accept the criticism of being too cynical, but my gut feeling tells me that something very fishy is going on. Especially when you consider the latest press release from a company called Frost & Sullivan — pharmaceutical and biotechnology research consultants.

The press release dated 27 June 2011, reads:

“The increasing prevalence of diabetes, including type-I diabetes, is ensuring rapid growth for the insulin delivery devices market... The global insulin management systems market (comprising insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors) was valued at $1.01 billion in 2009 and is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12 per cent to meet the rising needs of an ever expanding diabetic community...

...The growth of the diabetes solutions market will cause a ripple effect in related markets such as the specialty foods market as well as the testing equipment and delivery devices market...

Early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes will ensure longer and healthier living for diabetics. It will also sustain long-term revenue growth for manufacturers of insulin delivery devices...”

So, it all starts with one pill... then you develop symptoms for a disease you never had before... soon you’ll take two pills... and if things get worse you’ll need a glucose monitor and an insulin delivery device... and before you know it you and your ‘illnesses’ are the driving force and the economic backbone of one of the biggest global industries and world powers... Big Pharma!
