Can the National Health Service become a Natural Health Service?

National health is a bone of contention for almost everyone... in the UK, our National Health Service (NHS) is on the brink of disintegrating and politicians are calling for an entire overhaul of the system, whilst in the US their entire healthcare system is going through a massive reformation.
Yet, none of our politicians seem to think that their so- called ‘reforms’ and ‘modernisation’ of health services, could benefit from incorporating alternative medicines into treatment programmes. This is despite the fact that patients are often desperate to find safe and effective natural treatments...
Previously, I told you how we all need to renew our efforts and become more involved when it comes to protecting our basic right to make our own health choices.
For those who missed the alert, I referred to the stringent EU Regulations, which threaten to drastically reduce the effectiveness of many essential herbs, vitamins and supplements.
Of course, this onslaught is not just aimed at Europe. It will definitely have global repercussions... one only needs to look at what is happening in the US, as part of their so-called ‘health reforms’, to realise there is a world-wide clamp-down on alternative medicine.
Shaping the future of national health
National health is a bone of contention for almost everyone... in the UK, our National Health Service (NHS) is on the brink of disintegrating and politicians are calling for an entire overhaul of the system, whilst in the US their entire healthcare system is going through a massive reformation.
Recently, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced the start of ‘big’ changes in the NHS, and said: ‘I want one of the great achievements of this Government to be the complete modernisation of our public services.’ Shortly afterwards, he promised that doctors will be given more powers in an effort to reduce time spent on administrative red tape, which some believe will give patients more choices...
Cameron’s statement echoes similar noises being made in the US. President, Barrack Obama, recently spoke about the health reforms in America, and said: “Everybody here understands the desperation that people feel when they're sick. And I think everybody here is profoundly sympathetic and wants to make sure that we have a system that works for all Americans.”
Yet, none of our politicians seem to think that their so- called ‘reforms’ and ‘modernisation’ of health services, could benefit from incorporating alternative medicines into treatment programmes. This is despite the fact that patients are often desperate to find safe and effective natural treatments... Let’s face it, alternative medicine has been around for centuries and in many cases is backed by sound scientific research, so it deserves a rightful place in any national health service.
However, at the moment, the future looks very bleak for alternative medicine, especially with the implementation of The Food Supplements Directive (EUFSD) in Europe, which will have a world-wide ripple-effect... and effectively put a global clamp-down on all natural treatments in motion. Yet, these stringent regulations remain unchallenged by governments promising health reforms to the masses...
Along with this, giving doctors more powers may in fact narrow-down patients’ choices!
As we all know, many doctors are influenced and pressured by Big Pharma to tout their side effect ridden drugs...
Pay with peanuts and you get monkeys
Recently, I attended a ground-breaking public debate, arranged by The Alliance for Natural Health, which included some of the top experts within the field of complimentary medicine. The topic of the debate was, ‘Can the National Health Service become a Natural Health Service?’
During the debate, one of the panel members, Prof. George Lewith, from the College of Medicine, in London, and world- renowned clinician and researcher, stated that 0.01% of the national budget in the UK is spent on natural medicine research... That’s a mere pittance!
With the average costs of a research trial starting at half a million pounds, how on earth is alternative medicine supposed to compete with Big Pharma?
Yes, of course there is a case to be made that more evidence is needed to prove the effectiveness of natural therapies, but without proper funding, we’re fighting a losing battle...
Worse still, Dr. Robert Verkerk, from the Alliance of Natural Health and one of the panel members involved in the debate, announced that a startling 51 per cent of the known available treatments in conventional medicine have not yet been proven effective... Yet, these treatments are laid on the table... often touted as ‘the only available option’... statins, chemotherapy and radiation therapy all spring to mind.
It seems to me that the mainstream’s insistence on evidence-based medicine is depriving patients from real treatment options! Apart from that, it also exposes the hypocracy of government policy makers...
Strength in numbers
Much as the debate was informative, the only direction forward is to stop preaching to the converted and to start introducing the wonders of natural medicine to those who as yet fail to understand it’s irreplaceable value.
