Placebo — The Dummy Pill That Could be Tainting Research Results
Date: 15/11/10
In this day and age, anyone who gets a prescription and simply takes the drug in good faith without questioning its safety and effectiveness must be a very brave man or woman indeed.
Not only do we now know that only the positive outcomes of medical trials are published in an effort to increase sales and marketability, we also know that the side effects of many drugs are underplayed for the same reasons.
Double blind or just blind?
Recently, an analysis of randomized controlled placebo trials (RTC) — the ‘untouchable’ medical gold standard — was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Worryingly, the results found that substances used as placebos are not disclosed, neither are there any measures in place to establish whether these substances could potentially affect the outcome of a trial.
Hallo! This is cause for serious concern!
It’s surprising that a study like this has not been carried out before, especially when you consider the fact that most drug companies make their own placebo pills for research purposes, and for each individual study they create a unique placebo formula - sometimes including ingredients that match ingredients in the drugs being tested.
In effect, this travesty potentially makes each and every drug trial ever conducted biased and flawed... which shouldn’t come as a massive surprise considering all the recent negative reports on the underhand tactics employed by the drug giants, who are anything but whiter than white! Add to that the numerous dangerous side effects linked to many drugs and it’s hardly reassuring.
Of course, the medical establishment will have us believe that placebos consist of ‘inactive substances’ and for this reason, their protocol must be trusted...
Yeah right, like there is such a thing as an inactive substance... sugar, for example, has a reaction in our bodies when we take it... Let’s face it, even water can be fatal if too much is consumed in one go.
Messy business
In a previous alert, my colleague Jenny Thompson, revealed that more than 90 per cent of all drugs have been found to be effective for only 30 to 50 per cent of those who use them. She also eluded to some of the other reasons why the results of most medical trials can be regarded as downright fraudulent.
Firstly, new drugs are tested by the drug companies that have developed them... and now we also know they use their own placebos made of undisclosed ‘inactive’ substances. Then Big Pharma puts up complex walls of legal protection to hide information about the possible adverse effects or lack of effectiveness of their drugs.
Lastly, in the hypocritical world of mainstream medicine where ‘I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine’ a new drug doesn't actually need to be very effective to gain approval... in fact all it really needs to be able to do, is turn massive profits.
The oddest thing is that the medical mainstream really believes it is improving and extending the lives of millions of people with these drugs!
Really!
This latest analysis shows just how easy it can be for unscrupulous drug manufacturers to contaminate their anonymous and inactive placebo with a substance that makes their patients just a little bit sicker – even if only on one or two clinical indicators — thereby influencing the results in favour of the trial drug... I am sure it’s happened before...
This year alone we’ve reported numerous times about how the underhand tactics of Big Pharma have come to the fore after many patients’ lives have been ‘ruined’ by prescribed drugs and therapies... drugs and therapies that once were classed safe and effective.
I’m talking about Avandia (Diabetes), Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Edronax (antidepressant), Celebrex (Arthritis), Fosamax (Osteoporosis), Seroquel (antipsychotic), Paxil (antidepressant) and Tamoxifen (breast cancer) to name a few... and these are just the ones we’ve reported on this year so far...
One thing is for certain, if Big Pharma wants to repair their damaged reputation, they will have to start providing a list of ingredients contained in their placebo’s, start publishing all clinical trial data (good and bad), stop using doctors as medical reps to push drugs that have been tested with a biased and fraudulent protocol, and start handing over many aspects of their product testing (that they currently have full control over) to independent resources.
In other words, be transparent and honest!
Perhaps, only then, will I take a prescription drug without fearing the worst...
