Your Fluoride Protection Plan...

However, other health experts believe that dental fluorosis is the first visible sign of fluoride poisoning. Scientists from the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), after studying all the evidence, concluded that the public water supply should not be used "as a vehicle for disseminating this toxic and prophylactically useless ... substance."
Regular readers of our Daily Health alerts will know that we’ve written about the dangers of fluoride in drinking water and other daily household products in the past.
Fortunately, it appears that the message is finally getting across to the medical authorities in some parts of the world, at least.
Fluoride: Thailand setting the example
Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), recently revealed that water with more than 1.5mg of fluoride per litre doubled the risk of discoloured teeth among young children, compared to 0.7mg.
As a result, health officials in Thailand are pushing forward to cap the maximum amount of fluoride in bottled water to 0.7mg per litre. Currently, the accepted amount of fluoride per litre of bottled drinking water is 1.5mg.
Thailand’s Public Health Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, said that a 2007 report from the National Statistical Office showed that 29 per cent of household drinking water in the country comes from bottled water, and that only 2.24 per cent or 100 companies in the country produced bottled water with less than 0.7mg of fluoride.
These efforts, from a small country like Thailand, are not only commendable but also put them far ahead of developing countries like the US and the UK, who stubbornly refuse to accept the proven health risks associated with fluoride. All of this in spite of warnings from The World Health Organisation (WHO) that drinking water with more than 4mg of fluoride per litre (consumed regularly) can cause bone abnormalities, joint pain and disability.
Fluoride: What are the dangers?
The fluoride debate has been raging for quite some time. There are those, like the Australian Dental Association (ADA), that believe there is no convincing or credible scientific evidence that fluoride, when supplied at the optimum level (one part per million) in drinking water, causes any adverse health effects.
However, other health experts believe that dental fluorosis is the first visible sign of fluoride poisoning. Scientists from the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), after studying all the evidence, concluded that the public water supply should not be used "as a vehicle for disseminating this toxic and prophylactically useless ... substance."
There are now a growing number of studies linking fluoride consumption to serious conditions such as cancer. Research has linked fluoride to as many as 10,000 cancer deaths in the US each year, with a high incidence of bone cancer among men exposed to fluoride.
Since 1990, 54 US and Canadian cities have rejected hydrofluorosilic acid (main source of fluoride), but almost 60 per cent of the US remains fluoridated. In these areas, there has been a dramatic increase in bone cancer in young males aged between 9-19. A National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Programme recorded an alarming increase in the incidence of bone cancer in young men living in the fluoridated areas of Iowa and Seattle of 79 per cent. But in the unfluoridated areas the incidence of bone cancer decreased by 4 per cent.
Professor Hardy Limeback, a consultant to the Canadian Dental Association studied the health effects of fluoride on children and he warned that children under three years should never drink fluoridated water or use fluoride toothpaste or products, and that fluoridated water must never be used for making baby formula.
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway , Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands and Italy have all banned the addition of hydrofluorosilic acid to drinking water and so have Japan and India.
Fluoride: More than you bargained for
We don’t ingest fluoride just simply by drinking water or brushing our teeth, it also enters our bodies through other sources such as processed food, some cheaper (lower-end of the market) vitamin tablets, and drinks like fruit juice, soda and tea.
Fluoride: 7 steps to protect your health against fluoride’s harmful effects
1. If you live in a fluoridated area get a reverse osmosis filter fitted to the main kitchen tap. For more information contact The Pure H2O Company on 01784 221188, or visit: www.purewater.co.uk
2. Alternatively, you can help minimise the risk by drinking filtered or bottled water.
3. Use a non-fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. Fluoride- free toothpaste brands include Boot’s Non-Fluoride, Tom’s, Tea Tree, and Weleda.
4. Try to be aware of the fluoride content of food and drink – tinned fruit, vegetables and drinks are especially high. Fluoride is present in tea, regardless of whether it’s made with fluoridated water or not. So, opt for herbal teas made from non-fluoridated water instead.
5. Eat foods low in fluoride, such as eggs, milk, red meats (not organs), and fruit with protective rinds (such as lemons, bananas and pineapples).
6. Supplementing with calcium and magnesium salts helps eliminate fluoride from your body.
7. Avoid using kitchen utensils with non-stick coatings such as Teflon – these are made of fluoride.
This issue is something I feel very passionate about. With so much to write about, I simply don’t have enough time to bring you all the latest updates on fluoride today. So, in tomorrow’s alert I’ll provide you with more essential information on this important topic… including the potential fluoride contamination risk posed by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
