Some of the early signs of gum infections are often overlooked and accepted as the norm. However, bleeding, swollen or receding gums, in addition to plaque, bad breath and sensitive teeth are all early indications of oral health problems.

With over three quarters of UK adults suffering from visible plaque, it is vital to maintain good oral hygiene habits to prevent periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis – serious infections that can lead to drastic dental surgery or even tooth loss.

Take these simple steps to prevent gum disease

As well as brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing, you can also offer some TLC to your oral tissues by making small lifestyle changes that can make all the difference.

* Smoking will ruin your teeth as well as your lungs – it causes 50 per cent of all gum disease cases. Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, preventing healing – so try to cut down or stop altogether for the sake of your lungs and your smile!

* Eat a well-balanced diet to protect against plaque. Peanuts, yoghurt and milk are ideal for clearing the mouth of harmful sugars.

* Visit the dentist twice a year - while good oral hygiene will protect your mouth and teeth and reduce the plaque in your teeth, most people have irregularities in their teeth where plaque can build up out of reach and harden into tartar. This can only be removed by a dentist or hygienist using special tools in a process called scaling.

* Use an antiseptic mouthwash to reach the areas missed by brushing. Whilst there are many mouthwashes available on the market, very few of them are made with natural ingredients. This is where an amazing 7- herb formula mouthwash overshadows many of the commercially available mouthwashes. Best of all it’s an all-natural mouthwash, proven as an effective component of a daily oral hygiene routine.

Peri-Gum for that minty clean feeling

As far back as December 2004, Health Sciences Institute reported on this incredible botanical mouthwash. Peri-gum was formulated by Mr Joe Lesky, a naturopath, in response to an oral health condition one of his children was suffering from.

The concentrated blend of seven herbal extracts supports healthy gums and its low alcohol content also makes Peri-gum a gentle and natural alternative for great oral care. Suitable for vegans, this unique blend of natural ingredients works in a variety of ways to prevent gum disease and mouth ulcers:

* Cayenne: fights infection, stimulates circulation to promote healing, and acts as a pain reliever
* Bloodroot: reduces plaque
* Echinacea: immune system booster, antiseptic, antibacterial, and pain reliever
* Bayberry: astringent, tightens gums, antiseptic, and stimulant
* White Oak Bark: astringent, tightens gums, anti- inflammatory, and antiseptic
* Tea Tree Oil: antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial
* Peppermint Oil: stimulates circulation, and freshens breath. Has antiseptic properties.

Peri-Gum offers a safe and effective natural alternative to invasive oral surgery

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) is caused by plaque. If plaque isn’t removed regularly, it grows and causes pockets between your teeth and gums. Healthy gums rest on your teeth without any gaps or pockets, but a gap (pocket) measuring 7 millimeters or more will indicate gum disease which may lead to oral surgery or even to teeth falling out.

This is exactly why Joe Lesky decided to develop Peri-gum. His son Joe was diagnosed with a severe gum infection and periodontal disease and was told that oral surgery was inevitable. With this daunting prospect looming over him, Jim called on his father for help.

Joe had treated himself with homemade remedies for years and has compiled an extensive file of information on herbs and other natural healers. So when Jim called him for advice, Joe pulled out his herbal references, and, explains, “After much research, I combined several herbal extracts and essential oils, which were reported to be beneficial to gum health.” Peri-gum was born…

Joe instructed his son to mix the formula with water and rinse with it every morning and night. After administering the Peri-gum for several months the pockets had gone down more and his gums were pink and healthy. The periodontist was pleased with his progress and agreed to hold off on the surgery indefinitely. Today Jim’s gums are still in good shape and he continues to use the solution regularly to keep them that way. But even more amazing than Jim’s return to gum health without surgery is that the bone loss associated with the severe infection had completely reversed.

Studies prove the effectiveness of Peri-gum

Of course, the story of ‘Joe, Jim and the bleeding gums’ is anecdotal and in the world of science, where only research and studies can prove the effectiveness of any treatment, the next step in the story of Peri-gum was exactly that.

Most notably, one pilot study, completed at a prominent north-eastern dental school in the US, showed that volunteers’ gum and oral health were significantly improved after just four weeks of using Peri-Gum. Researchers evaluated the subjects’ progress by measuring the reduction of gingival health scores and reduction of plaque. Overall, they found a 20 per cent reduction in the subjects’ gingival health scores and a 16 per cent reduction in plaque.

The Diabetes Resource Centre (a non-profit organisation in the US that co-ordinates activities of various agencies that treat patients with Diabetes Mellitus), also assessed Peri- Gum in a 90 day study, and concluded that it “has significant potential as oral hygiene support in the management of Diabetes Mellitus”.

What to use for the best results

In every 29ml bottle of Peri-Gum Mouthwash Concentrate there are 900 drops. Peri-gum should be used daily to support healthy gums and to keep your mouth clean and fresh. Dilute 5 drops in 15ml of water (about a tablespoon), and rinse your mouth vigorously - twice a day.

Peri-Gum is available from numerous online resources and alternative health food stores.

Combine Peri-Gum with the power of Coenzyme Q10

In addition to Peri-Gum, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) - a vital nutrient needed by every cell in the body to make energy - is beneficial for a variety of diseases and disorders, including periodontal disease.

As early as the 1970s, researchers found that gum tissue in people with periodontal disease was often deficient in CoQ10. Subsequent studies have shown that CoQ10 doses of 50 mg to 75 mg a day can halt deterioration of the gums and allow healing to occur, sometimes within days of starting therapy. In one double-blind trial, 50 mg per day of CoQ10 was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms of gingivitis after three weeks of treatment.

Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, clinical cardiologist and author, reports that many of his patients see improvements in their gum health after beginning CoQ10 supplementation for heart disease. According to research by Dr. Sinatra, CoQ10's supportive effects on the immune system in general account for its ability to promote healing in diseased gums.

Dr. Victor Zeines, a holistic dentist, recommends 100 mg a day of CoQ10 in combination with other supplements to help reverse gum disease naturally. Leading UK Nutritionist Gareth Zeal recommends brushing your teeth with pure CoQ10 extracted from the capsules to speed up results in reversing gum disease.
