Stop cold sores in their tracks and prevent further outbreaks

Date: 01/05/05

If you suffer from persistent cold sores youll be all too familiar with the discomfort they cause.

If you suffer from persistent cold sores youll be all too familiar with the discomfort they cause. Not only are they painful but they can also leave you feeling extremely self-conscious particularly when a conspicuous scab begins to form.

Up until now, most sufferers have resigned themselves to the fact that these embarrassing outbreaks are something they simply have to put up with from time-to-time especially as conventional antiviral treatments, like Acicolvir (Zovirax) cream and tablets, often have little effect and can cause side-effects including itchiness, tiredness and diarrhoea. Fortunately, this neednt be the case as youre about to discover.

What causes cold sores to develop?
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV-1). When the virus enters your body it travels to the top end of your nerves and lies dormant, without causing symptoms.

However, with a suitable trigger such as stress, fever, menstruation, fatigue, alcohol, smoking, medication that suppresses the immune system, even sunshine the virus can quickly move back to your nerve endings and begin to replicate itself.

This is how cold sores start and their development is often preceded by a tingling or itching sensation that immediately sets alarm bells ringing for sufferers, who will recognise it as the onset of another outbreak. This is often accompanied by redness and swelling of the affected area, followed by the formation of a fluid-filled blister, which then breaks open, oozes and crusts over before eventually healing a week or so later.

How to speed up your recovery time and prevent cold sores
from returning
Vitamin C can cut the duration of an attack. Its important to maintain a strong immune system in order to strengthen your bodys resistance to the simplex virus. Vitamin C is well known for its immune-stimulating properties. When people with herpes infections were given just 200mg of vitamin C a day, together with 200mg of bioflavonoids, the duration of their symptoms was cut by 57 per cent, compared with the group taking a placebo (Oral Surg, 45:56-62, 1978).

Zinc is another immune booster and virus fighter, so it comes as no surprise that it has been found to prevent the recurrence of herpes infections (Med. Hypoth. 17:157-65, 1985). Take 30mg of zinc a day to prevent cold sores.

Echinacea bolsters your immune system. Available in tincture and capsule form and as a tea, Echinacea has been found to possess powerful antiviral and immune-boosting properties (Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2000,(2):CD000530; Hopfenmuller W., Arzneimittelforschung,1994:44 1005-13). It needs to be taken as soon as symptoms first appear, or better still, when you feel under stress or pressure, which increases the risk of the infection occurring. Echinacea is taken three to four times a day, depending on the preparation see individual product labels for dosage instructions.
The bee-derived remedy that helps stop cold sores in their tracks. Applied to cold sores five times a day, Bio-Propolis ointment is able to relieve pain, prevent secondary infections and speed up the healing process (Journal of Clinical Research 2001, Vol 4, 65-75). Bio-Propolis contains a substance called propolis, which is made by honeybees and is a mix of resinous tree sap and beeswax.

Chemical analysis of propolis shows that the compound possesses effective antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It also works as a local anaesthetic and can promote skin healing. All of these properties are responsible for its effectiveness against cold sores. Used early, its antiviral action can prevent a blister developing. Its antibacterial and anti-fungal action can prevent secondary infection or fungal contamination, while its anti-inflammatory action has a local anaesthetic effect, relieving pain and discomfort. Its anti-microbial action helps provide the best possible conditions in which the skin can heal.

One trial, involving 50 cold sore sufferers, showed that Bio-Propolis speeds up recovery time. Half of the patients were given propolis four times a day, whilst the remaining 25 received a placebo. The researchers found that cold sores had an average lifespan of just 3.84 days for those taking propolis, compared with 8.36 days for those taking the placebo (Szmeja Z, Kulczynski B and Konopacki K. Otolaryng. Pol., 1987, XLI, 3). Apply Bio-Propolis ointment to the affected area five times a day. Propolis should not be used if you have an allergy to bee products.

4 Simple Ways To Prevent An Outbreak
1. Avoid re-infection after youve suffered an attack. Always wash your hands after touching cold sores which are highly contagious dont touch your eyes and make sure you dont share items used for personal hygiene. And its vital you throw away your toothbrush if youve suffered a blister recently. Toothbrushes act as a magnet to the virus, harbouring it for days and causing re-infections easily.

2. Take steps to reduce stress. After an infection, the virus can remain dormant and be reactivated when your immune system is sluggish, or when you are under physical or emotional stress. Yoga is an incredibly powerful way of helping your body learn how to relax and rid your mind of anxious thoughts. For details of yoga teachers near you, contact The British Wheel of Yoga on 01529 306851.

3. Eating lots of immune-boosting foods can reduce the recurrence of cold sores. Make sure your diet contains lots of garlic, zinc and the amino acid lysine, which help boost immunity and suppress HSV (J. bacterial. 87:609-13,1964). Lysine is found in high protein foods like lamb, fish and chicken, whereas zinc is present in high amounts in seafood, hard cheese, nuts and seeds.

4. An easy way to avoid a common trigger.  Too much exposure to the sun increases your risk of developing a cold sore. Dont worry, that doesnt mean you need to hide indoors during the summer months, instead simply apply sunblock to your lips and face before prolonged exposure to the sun to help prevent an outbreak.

My cold sores are not like everyone elses when they get red marks. I dont know anyone who gets them as bad as I do.

Eva Posted 24/05/2009

I did not realise how uncomfortable they are.I'm having an attack at the minute and they sting and itch like mad. Very depressing.

beth Posted 25/05/2009

When I get cold sores, I get them bad. I have orange crust on them and they cover my whole lip area and the skin around it ... I just hide away ... is there anything good for secondary infections to ??? .... I have the cream the antibiotics and the ultra red machine-thingy but I've had this for three weeks now!

kirstie Posted 25/05/2009

I am suffering from an outbreak now and I am using all kinds of stuff. I have 3 seperate sores across my top lip an think I am developing another. I hate them. Because these ones are so bad, I have had to ring in work, sick. I have been using the lysine cream which I dont know if its actually making a difference... Previously, I tried ice on the affected area an it seemed to disappear faster but this time it made no difference. I am now using patches which cover the sors and are supposed to heal them but I am not sure if they have worked yet but they do seem to hide them slightly.

Ash Posted 02/06/2009

I hate coldsores there really annoying I get them every winter. I use Zovirax its ver helpful :)

chris Posted 11/06/2009

I always find the best way to prevent them is LYSINE......that is all I need...when my lip starts to tingle I take a couple of Lysine Tablets and keep it going for several days and that is all I need.

G Kelleher Posted 15/06/2009

Has anyone tried Bio-propolis?

Kirstie Posted 16/06/2009

I take Lysine capsules every day, a multivitamin with Vit C and zinc in it, and use "Abreva" when I get a sore. Hope this helps someone. I have two sores right now and they are so frustrating. If I could hide away alone for a week, I would!

ellie Posted 02/08/2009

I have l-lysine tablets available fat any herbal shop like Holland and Barrat, I have one a day and since I've been using them I haven't had one since and I usually get three at a time. Another thing I used to do when I could feel a cold sore coming was rub nail polish remover on it, it sounds weird but it works!

Jennifer  Posted 13/08/2009

My GP told me to put alcohol on my cold sores which obviously didn't work so I went to a dermatologist who put me on tablet form of valaciclovir, the medicine that is in zovirax, but it is in too small a dose in the zovirax creams to work. I had a 6 months course of the tablets and suffered 3 cold sores during that time but they never developed or crusted and simply shrunk when I doubled the dose of tablets at the outset of an outbreak. I have come off the medicine and now have 3 cold sores and cracked lips, just as bad as before, so expect to be put back on the drug. Not ideal but a short term solution when I have a busy job.

Nicole Posted 24/08/2009

I use Bio-Propolis along with other more traditional methods. I've found it does help and ideal for work and meetings as it's a brown gel, so you don't look as strange with a massive lump of cream on your lip! I used to suffer with secondary infections, so now I never touch my coldsores and use cotton buds (q-tips) to take off/put on cream when I have an outbreak.

Deb Posted 28/08/2009

I use Lomabrit every night to prevent outbreaks. It has been really great (available from herpes society website) but unfortunately I am reading this at 1.30am having woken up with the dreaded tingle and red swelling on my lip - am trying ice on my lip as I read others tips!

Meighan Posted 29/08/2009

I get cold sores really bad and I take Lysine and Vitamin C every day. Both are available at Wal Mart. When I get one I dry it out with rubbing alcohol, rub Abreva on with a q-tip and then cover it with a glob of Carmex every night. I do it at night because I can't really go to work with a huge glob of Carmex on my face. It seems to cut the healing time in half but if you could do it continuously throughout the day it would probably work even faster.

Charlie Posted 01/09/2009

The best thing ever is H-balm by forces of nature, put this on when you feel the tingle and they won't even show, best product ever made!!!!

Lolly82 Posted 19/09/2009

I have suffered from cold sores on and off for years, I'm more prone to them if I am tired or stressed or just a bit run down. I started taking Lysine tablets after my last horrible cold sore outbreak, and touch wood I have never had one since and its been about six months. I took 3/4 tablets a day for the 1st week then after that I take one a day. You are best taking them on an empty stomach (well that's what the woman in the health food shop I bought them in told me) You can't get Lysine in most of the big chemists, but most health food shops stock it x

Max Posted 23/09/2009

Ok people, it's a virus, how well you fight it depends on how strong your immune system is. If you eat junk food and don't exercise, your immune system will be very weak and you'll catch every single thing that's around. You can't eat crap and then expect a couple of supplements to magically solve all your problems. I used to have an outbreak every 2 months. I started eating very healthy. Now I haven't had one in 10 months until this morning. I interpret that as me not having paid enough attention to my diet lately, and that's the result. Once you fix the food, almost everything follows.

Bex Posted 12/11/2009

Silicea gel made from silica, the same stuff which you get in the little packets in shoe boxes etc to absorb moisture and stop it damaging the product! Apply this 'science' to coldsores - it instantly dries up your coldsores, absorbing all of the horrible infectious fluid and therefore speeding up healing time! Up until my last outbreak (last week) I had been using zovirax until the sore turned into a blister and then putting the silicea gel on (you can actually feel it absorbing the fluid- your lips tighten!) but for the first time tried using the silicea gel on BEFORE it reached full blown fluid-filled blister stage and it stopped it from growing and formed a scab on the day after it appeared. Day three of my coldsore and it is almost gone. I would say by day 5 it will be fully healed.

I hope it works as well for you as it has for me- I now feel as though I am at least a little bit in control of my coldsores!!

john Posted 15/11/2009

Having been suffering from coldsores all my life believe me I have tried everything! I thought all my worries were over when Lysine was recommended by a fellow sufferer in a health remedy shop. Unfortunately this was not to be, as I got an outbreak even though I was taking a pill every day! Recently I was recommended liquorice lip balm and have not had a coldsore since...that's been 4 months now (compared to 1 in every 2-3 weeks)!!! I swear by this for now and hope it continues to prevent any future outbreaks. If anyone is interested in giving it a bash, you can get it online from the "skinshop" for around £8. I highly recommend sufferers do give it a go!

Good luck!
